Without going in to all the ins and outs as to why HRH Mansour bought us I’m sure the city of Manchester had a part to play in it, it is the country’s second City (eff off Brum) with one of the country’s best supplied airports and within an hour of almost all the big northern Cities.

I’m sure they’ve wanted to work with the council on all of this rather than against them, so why would you build a new stadium, the current arrangement benefits us and the council, and I’m sure that helps in terms of planning permission and subsequent investments in the city.

It’s actually pretty frightening (for others!) how far this relationship could go, we know Etihad already have plans for Manchester and Airport city and we are now regenerating whole areas of the City. We work with the council for the benefit of the city, we bring money in to the city, jobs etc. while that lot in Stretford are sucking money out of the club to take back to America.

I’m sure the council will want to work with us even more closely in the future, we’ve shown it isn’t pie in the sky stuff, it is tangible and is being delivered as promised. We should change the name from “The City of Manchester” to just “Manchester City” as the way things are going Manchester is going to be quite literally blue :-)

You're spot on: that 75,000 was pretty much spread over three sides. some nice photo's here of the big side terrace - looks much bigger than the kippax admittedly.

I think it only looks bigger because it has no roof and is less steep.

An old picture without the roof, shows how big it was, the distance front to back is far wider than the Charlton picture.

Those were the days, crammed in like sardines, pissed wet through and lucky to see any of the game if you were under 5'10" tall.

It must also have cost peanuts to build as over three quarters of it was just mounds of earth with concrete terracing on top, and don't get me started on the toilets they were third world at best.

Im taking my Dad to his first game in about 5 years tomorrow and cant wait to walk around the ground and campus area to show him the changes. Can we go into the CFA area? Or is there anywhere with good views?

My daughter's not been for four years either - I think she's going to be surprised tomorrow too!

wow! don't what it is about your picture 'the way you captured it maybe, could be the guys head which is giving a true distance' but that stand is a monster , cant wait for next season this should give the ground a lot more noise

I recall earlier chats on Abu Dhabi investment spreading further afield than the Etihad Campus/Wider East Manchester area, and it looks like it's starting to happen:

The key word in this development is Graphene. Some say the discovery of this material in Manchester means the city will lead a new industrial revolution. I think the Sheikh will get a handsome return on this investment just as he will with the 6000 homes he is building In Manchester. This is all fantastic inward investment for our city. What makes me laugh most is that the UK media are so far behind the curve on this story.
Manchester is on the brink of a fantastic economic era and City will be riding the crest of the wave. The Trafford rags will not know what hits them.

Over 20 years ago I remember reading an article about The Valley and in it there was a timeline of significant dates detailing the history of the ground, it's downfall, and the subsequent triumphant return in the early 1990's. One stat that jumped out at me was, IIRC, as recently as 1980 the official capacity was still as high as 67,000 which, somewhat astonishingly, would surely have made it the largest capacity of any club ground in England at the time. That year capacity was slashed to something like 13,000 presumably for health and safety reasons. It must've been a fucking monster of a terrace.

I once read that the Valley had attracted crowds up to 70000 but it had never been full so they didn't actually know how many it held.

I'm sure if Sheikh Mansour had bought Charlton in 2008 fans of clubs like Liverpool would have comically said they were a club "without history".

Their demise is fully merited.

That's a bit of a harsh thing to say about Charlton ;)
