Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

I don't recall anyone saying 4 million visitors a yr, i recall 1 million a yr not counting the football crowd.

The planning permission for a gym over on the Asda site is'nt indicating how long it will be staying (the gym)..club shop style buildings can be thrown around like tents nowadays...anyone know how long is left on Asda's lease?

After a quick surch I came up with 6 million a year expected at the site not the 4 million..
I'd have to dredge through the net to find exactly who said what as it was going back to 2011, and posabley on the eastland Vagas thread, the thread which came befour this one.
Memories telling me the club or somebody seemingly close to the club released something along the lines of " want to build a destination that will attract up to 6million visitors a year " this was talked about on here in length and I remember the evening news running with the story too.

Suppose retail and exhibitions centre etc could make up that number of around 18k a day but would perhaps have to use the carparks to make a decent size retaile village
Think your 1million a year 3000 a day could be acheaved with a witherspoons and a travel lodge and a bowling ally m8

I think this is a thread below reacting to the figures released

6 million was in the local business press. It wasn't an official figure, but I suspect it was an off-the-record comment by someone at or with links to the Council.

Honnestly with out dredging the net couldn't say if it was official release or not but I'm leaning towards your right it may not have been a club release, I'm feeling it may have been one or two local big wigs or maybe someone off the local radio chessman perhaps, plus maybe or a ex player in the Dennis Tueart ilk saying it... It all seemed plausible at the time as there was many claiming to have had the privaladge of seeing plans or being told of the plans fron deep inside the club

This was one of the quotes doing the rounds at the time (and part of the 'seminal fluid' which gave birth to this grand thread):

If the development goes ahead, Sportcity will become one of the biggest urban visitor destinations in Europe.

Definitely think retail/food drink would be added in those figures (Traffic Centre pulls in 18 million visitors per annum).
I've always assumed the leisure anchor is the tricky bit and recent chit chat about the reining in spending in the UAE might have a bearing on grand plans. Other than that, I guess it's just sit back and wait. Frustrating as those who saw the original plans have built this mythical status referencing Ferrari World/Yas Marina/Panda Land.
There was recent discussions on Manchester building as many as 100,000 - 200,000 apartments in the city centre over the coming years (and the scale of some of these projects about to break ground is staggering) - that's a lot of potential visitors already on it's doorstep (never mind 10% of the population within a 45 min journey to the site).

I wan ago panda land:-)

There was a mythical image built up of a destination that got us all giddy.
I just don't see the space to put it on with what we have at the moment, even a small retail park would need car parking spaces so we couldn't use the car parks , and you see loads of these retail villages dying a slow death these days with proper rubbish shops just selling off there last years stock on the cheep, so don't Invissadge our owners had something along them lines as there grand plans or something along the lines of a poundland, a bowling ally and a b&q
Personally I'd like to see something along the lines of a print works indoor type venue with exhabition / conference type fasciitis above somewhere with decent food and bars but guess they will need to build up the area 1st to get some local people to actually use it

The Eastlands Regeneration Framework, which was consulted on in the summer of 2011, is by far the most comprehensive official statement of what was intended for the area. It can be downloaded as a PDF here: http://www.manchester.gov.uk/downlo...ands_regeneration_framework_full_document.pdf

It said the following about the leisure destination (the emphasis is mine, to show why people were getting excited):

Introduce destination leisure and recreation facilities

The development of a destination leisure and tourism attraction is a key component of the overall strategy for securing the comprehensive development of Eastlands and represents an opportunity to introduce to Manchester an internationally distinctive concept in leisure provision. This should set new standards in terms of content, scale and customer experience, maximising the opportunity for local people to benefit from the future success of the site.

A successful destination leisure and tourism attraction at Eastlands will:

— Be internationally distinctive in content and scale and will be set firmly within the context of the wider Eastlands facilities and the objectives of the East Manchester Strategic Regeneration Framework, Manchester City Council’s existing and emerging planning policy framework, and regional and national planning policies.

— Be differentiated from but complementary to the offer in the city centre and from a regional scale leisure development.

— Offer an exciting experience that caters for all, including families, underpinned by a unique vision.

— Generate a significant number of additional visitors to Eastlands each year.

— Offer a mix of world-class content that will animate the site all year round throughout the day and night.

— Consolidate Eastlands’ role as a destination of national and international significance.

I believe that, as somapop says, the climate in Abu Dhabi has changed with regard to the types of investment they're prepared to fund, and a more robust business case is now required than perhaps at certain times in the past. In addition, I think that the economic conditions prevailing in the UK are such at the moment that potential partners (and there aren't many who could deliver something corresponding to the description above) are a little bit wary of committing to a project on this scale.

Frankly, I think they'd have a better chance of doing a deal tomorrow if they were prepared to go for an attraction based round a casino. However, that's not the image that ADUG is seeking to portray, and it looks as though they'll have to wait if they're to get the kind of family-friendly, educational centrepiece they want.

Not sure if it's been posted before so sorry in advance if it has. Noticed a few posts about speculation regarding us developing Asda. But having been on the decathlon website this morning and found that they are opening an eastlands branch in June they have a map Showing it to be located on the asda site (presume where next used to be). So it would backup other posters saying city will not be developing that site.

Looks like your right from the planning website http://www.publicaccess.manchester.gov.uk/associateddocs/selecteddoc.aspx?111244-dpp-0002.pdf will be a Decathalon store and Airspace Trampoline Park. Lets hope they leave the roof on or the trampers will be trying to get high to watch the games for free on match day :o) There is definitely no chance of us taking over the Asda site anytime soon
