Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

Presumably there would not be a clash of events ie if there was a concert on a Saturday night City would not be allowed to play at the same time (the police would decide). Wembley arena is just a couple of hundred yards from Wembley Stadium. It holds about 12,500 and the stadium about 87,000. At the Etihad there is a hell of a lot space for exits on those big car parks towards the gas works.
You may be right but what would be good for City is we could have a big covered area for fans to use pre-match as well as a huge increase in corporate seats. If they build a hotel nearby they could market joint football/concert packages to overseas visitors. The current Manchester Arena is past its sell-by-date and when I have been the acoustics have been pretty shit (at least in the cheaper seats)

He’s talking about having a building bigger than the Manchester Arena where the City Store is.

I assumed it would go backwards above the canal and tram station into the area where the huge car parks are now. Clearly there is not enough space where the store is. It is probably pie in the sky but you never know. Public transport remains the biggest issue whatever happens.

Off the top of my head trying to remember the layout I think I was imagining were the tennis centre is and somehow incorporating Joe Mercer way then were the store is to the back of the new stand would be a covered fan area basically a covered City Square connected to the new stand.

City blinkers aside, I have to say that it doesn't make a huge amount of sense to have another arena out of town. The MEN needs an upgrade but the fact that it is located in the city centre right next to Victoria Station makes it ideal from that point of view. Relatively easy access / travel home and the city centre right on the doorstep with not a long walk to the fringes of the NQ.

Having an Arena at Sport City would save having to buy city centre expensive beer.

Would probably make them improve transport links to the Etihad, win, win !
75,000 make it to the OT in midweek. The reason they do is because their season-ticket holders are compelled to make what for many is a long journey home at night. That's the difference, not local transport.

Unlike the Manchester Arena, it would not have to make commercial sense if bolted on to MCFC.

In the medium term (say 7-10 years) there is a real opportunity for a new rail station directly serving the Sports City campus.

The rail lines are there now, but are scarcely used, just a few freight trains or empty trains getting to where they need to be.

But the interesting thing is that part of the Northern Rail Hub project the lines that currently are only used for freight will be used to carry east-west passenger traffic. The idea is that some services that currently go into via Piccadilly or carry on west via Manchester Oxford Rd will instead be routed along the Ashburys-Phillips Park line and then on to Victoria, either terminating there or carrying on to Liverpool, Bolton or wherever.

If this happens (as currently planned), we would have a lot of passenger trains using that currently underused line. There could easily be 4-6 trains per hour in each direction.

Plus there is plenty of space to build a new railway station in this area.

In terms of demand for the station, of course we already have the stadium and velodrome etc., but in future there will a lot of extra demand for access to the area with an expanded Stadium, a new Arena (if it happens), plus the plans for a new university campus and the new office developments etc. that are planned for the area immediately to the west of the Stadium. Plus there will very likely be new housing and student accommodation in the area too.

I guess ADUG would likely see the value of the station too as it would make the area more attractive for commercial tenants and new residents. It could also potentially reduce the need for car parking so they could use more land for development.
