The Canals and Rivers Trust are responsible. They rely on donations and memberships via waterways passes for canal boat owners.

Sadly they’re responsible for the maintenance of hundreds and hundreds of miles of waterways and struggle for money.

In general they do a lot of excellent conservation work and deserve cutting a bit of slack

(I’m a keen cyclist and walker, and the Ashton Canal past the Etihad is part of my daily commute too. I’ve spoken to them quite a bit!)

They get about £50m a year from the govt as a subsidy and they were also given a £500m property portfolio from the state…. Not sure they are awash with funds but they have a healthy income.

I’d imagine there’s a few thousand miles of canals and rivers in the country. That budget won’t go very far!

Once upon a time there was this virus called COVID, all service staff throughout the Kingdom were furloughed so they all found alternative employment at Amazon. The end.

Seen this multiple times all over the Manchester area.

Also the Peak District.

no casual staff, no truckers, no farm pickers… the list of diverse essential jobs that need filling is becoming endless, with the double whammy of brexit and covid

Brought back memories of San Antonio , coached there a long time ago.
Somehow could never see A steamy river walk laden with bars and grills happening in Manchester.
Although it has changed drastically for the better over the last few years.

Never just settle for mediocrity.

Manchester was a city with no imagination for three quarters of a century, and a lot of that still carries over with a lot of attitudes even in the 2020s. But, don’t forget what Benjamin Disraeli once said; “Have you seen Manchester? Manchester is as great a human exploit as Athens!”, and; “What Manchester does today, the rest of the world does tomorrow!”

That’s more of what we should be aspiring to.

Forget those post-industrial decades that shaped a declining city, and the attitudes of its citizens and of onlookers for too long. Manchester is an important city on the world stage and should be striving to see projects that are at that level.

It’s a shame that investors are so overly interested in property, because the stretch between Salford Quays and the Etihad Campus is linked by waterways, with the city centre in the middle.

With investors with some real drive and imagination, we could have a great waterway similar to the San Antonio River Walk. The SARW is Texas’ most visited tourist attraction. Yet all we’re getting along Pamona to the West of the city centre and along the canal to the Etihad are the arse end of apartment blocks.

Just imagine a day out at the footy where we can have a nice walk along the Aston Canal with restaurants and bars, and general nicer scenery to walk down than this:

New Islington Marina is a start, but the stretch goes 1.7 miles until you get to the Etihad from there. So much could be done!

Obviously this isn’t a City thing, the investors could be anyone.

I had to Google the San Antonio River Walk, that looks a cracking place.

Do they benefit from fishing licences etc? I know they do ok out of marinas and private moorings, properties near me pay a £1000 pa for ‘access’ that’s before anything like a jetty is added

I think I’ll be content that we have just spent £100m on a player and are building a new £300m Arena which will make the whole area around City Square unrecognisable in the next two years.

We are not spending 300million on the arena !!
