Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

This gives you an idea of what kind of angle a single tier stand would need to be at.

The back of the terracing would need to be in the exact same place as the South Stand third tier finishes as the old cable net needs to come into the stadium between stand and roof.

Ripping out the current North Stand is possible as it wasn’t originally there in the first place. It would look like this but in reverse:

I really think the north stand will be put back for 4 or 5 years who knows more. I looked at and backed up every business reason to extend the north stand but after Saturday game Vs Burnley the owners will have realised. Not that the expansion hinged on this game but it brings it home.

Saturday was a 3pm KO, fantastic weather, not played a game for a while, top of the league, chance to see a few goals going in the net. It looked like the poorest home PL attendance so far this season ! I have not seen as many empty seats in 115 ss for a while at a home PL game, this isn't the corporate stand or family stand it is where we sing and is generally packed. All around the stadium you could see spare seats. I imagine the Fulham cup game will have a low attendance, lets see how the next CL home game is ( last one Vs Lyon wasn't full by a long way ).

If the stadium isn't full for what ever reason on a Saturday 3pm KO when we are top of the league, the owners wont invest to increase capacity.

it was possibly one of the fullest I have seen it - great crowd. I would say 52k at least in the stadium - about 95% occupied absolutely fine.

If there is to be an expansion of the North Stand, it is imperative that the club find ways of providing better exits from the official car parks rather than all the traffic leaving via Alan Turing Way.

I’m not sure about the overall attendance but I was sat in 93:20 and there were rows of empty seats in front of me. That’s not a lack of demand though - just over pricing.

Just because there were some empty seats doesn't mean it wasn't a sellout. The 54K official attendance suggests that it was, as the only place where there were large gaps was in the Burnley section. Near me it was full. The fact that it is the start of half term may explain some of the stayaways due to family holidays. Lots of people don't use the ticket exchange if they can't make it which I find bizarre.

The third level of the away end wasn't full, a whole block hadn't been sold by the look of it, though it filled in, as most of their village idiots moved into it soon after kick off, to be nearer the home fans so they could shout at us

Had a dream they started building the new North Stand over night and we only found out because someone drove past in the morning and took a photo.

It was already taller that the current one so they must have been working fast!

So, I’ve done some ‘analysis’ and decided that a one tiered stand would be hard as **** to pull off.

Basicially if you have standing behind the goal then you have to have it in the corners as well or else the view of some fans in those corners will be partly obstructed by those in the standing section.

This becomes an even bigger issue when you consider that to produce a one tiered stand, the current stand would need to be completely rebuilt at a new angle which would fit within the confines of the original cable net and supports.

If the stand was rebuilt without the corners then some people sat there would also have an angle of the pitch cut off by the new steeper stand.

Due to building a new steeper stand these corners would therefore need to be rebuilt or remodelled, which is where the difficulty comes in as they are also part of the CB and East Stand, running under the third tiers which actually run past the pitch.

This can be seen in the photo below:

See the new Spurs one tier stand which covers the corners. You can see the edges of those corners are also at a higher level than the stands at the sides:

The seats on the sides right next to the small walls of where the steeper one tiered stand begins must be at least parallel to the touchline to avoid having views blocked off by the walls. Easy to do when you build a stadium from scratch, not so much when you’re reworking.

And here’s an example of how the one tiered stand cuts into the side stands:

This is what we would need to happen and why it would be so hard to pull off given the CB and East Stands arent configured with a one tiered stand in mind.

Closer look at the wall divide between the two stands which is there due to the single tier stand being much steeper:

Verdict:

A single tier North Stand would require much of the current North Stand to be demolished. The redevelopment would impact the northern ends of the CB and East Stands as the corners would also need to be completely remodelled. This would be extremely difficult to pull off, requiring full stand closure for a time if they did it over one season and would be very expensive and costly in terms of build and lost ticket revenue. The end result would obviously be a brilliant ‘home end’ stand though.

The easier solutions are to do a copy of the South Stand (the original plan), or expand the current second tier like in the pics below, perhaps having the lower tier (and corners!) as safe standing if there is a change in government legislation.

Cheers for this ManCityX, kinda confirms what I already thought that within the current confines of the stadium and cable net roof we are unlikely to get anything with the NS that isn't pretty much a SS copy, maybe with some safe standing in corners etc.

I do think eventually that the roof will go but it will be over time. I imagine we're looking to integrate the collar site and the stadium long term as they already do in USA, with shops, merchandise etc. being part of the stadium as a whole, Patriots place at Gillette Stadium being an example. It may be at that time we look at doing something different or unique with the stadium.

I'm fine with stadium as is, and with a SS copy, I'm just impatient to see a "finished" Etihad Campus but maybe there won't ever be a "finished" campus as it will continue to evolve over time, keeping up with social trends, technology etc.

I’ve thought of a way we could redevelop the North Stand into a single tier without doing a complete rebuild, keeping the current 2nd tier and the 1st & 2nd tier concourses intact.

This would be done by keeping the 2nd tier open and extending that tier further back/up in the same development style as was done with the South Stand third tier, so build it from behind and then join things up when the original roof is removed towards the end of development in the close season.

That’s the easy part.

To create the front of this large single tier, they’d need to construct from the front of the 2nd tier and down, overlaying the 1st tier at a steeper rake to join up with the rest of the development. The main difficulty here would be the entries/exits where they’d probably need to use the current doors and create new walkways under the new terracing and then out into the new section. This would obviously be because the current doors would be underneath the newly laid section rather than above as they are now.

I think it was DiscoSteve who did the below diagram of how an extended 2nd tier would look, although it doesn’t include the potential front section extension I mentioned above. It does give you a good idea of how this would all work though. The blue part is how the South Stand 3rd tier looks by comparison.

Why not just mirror the South Stand expansion. Only way I would go for it is if it could be done without disrupting the season.

Whats the maximum rake allowed in the UK?

I read that Osasuna fans are voting on various expansion options and one of them included a tier with a rake of 40 degrees.

Any expansion of the north stand should include a larger concourse than the South Stand Level 3 does (where I sit), and more vomitories further up would be a good idea too.

Putting 2+2 together and coming up with 5 bon jovi are playing klanfield next summer .dont they usually play the etihad ?
No concerts next summer ?

Scrub that idea then :-(
Dont think it makes any difference if it follows the south stand the ground works and new stand are built behind the existing stand and don't impact on the pitch and existing stand. Think we had concerts the first summer of the SS. The cranes only went on the pitch the summer before opening to remove the old roof.

Is a compromise a small unchanged lower tier - family stand. And then a new tier attached to the present second tier to make a combined second and third tier - with no corporate. I’m not sure if that’s technically possible but it would be a good compromise and I guess this new combined upper tier could be rail seating / safe standing.
