Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

The solution to many of the transport constraints is in the bottom LH corner of that photo
I know it goes to Victoria as it is, but it wouldn't require a tremendous amount of engineering to connect Picadilly too.

If they reconnected the fork from just before Ardwick station to the Enterprise on Ashton Old Road, you could have a direct route from Picadilly that I guess would take about 3 mins in each direction.

Although it would give Manchester a loop between Pic and Vic, it would involve (re)building two small bridges, so its not going to be cost effective for 20-30 events (matches and concerts) a year, but maybe if there was an arena....

Even running a train as far as Ashburys, then running it in the other direction and going up the other fork at Gorton Road would be a solution.

I suspect Northern wouldn't have the spare capacity though anyway.

If they rebuilt the route into Piccadilly, they could trains round a continuous loop through Victoria and Oxford Road in both directions, a City centre overground service, it would be used every day, plenty of people live close to that loop.

Wonder if we’ll ever get a new ‘best in the world’ stadium where the athletics ground currently is? (Probably not)

I don't think they need to move the site of the stadium. If you look at what Real Madrid are doing to the Bernabeu without increasing the footprint or closing it at all, it's amazing how much you can transform an old stadium to make it look and feel like the best in the world.

If they eventually go through with the South Stand expansion and fill in the gaps to take the capacity up to around 70,000, they should be able to update the exterior beyond recognition.

With the NS extension, the inside if the ground will look fantastic. I think where people feel it falls flat a bit is the exterior and the landscaping around the ground. So much concrete and greyness, its dysmal to say the least. If they extend and the addition of the arena and facilities to support that, i think that's when they will make the stadium and surrounding area much more pleasing on the eye.

I've always assumed they'll transform the outside, including the outside areas, city square, paths around the campus etc. when it's done. Not to go on about it too much but the Bernebeu before/after -

From the outside you'd never know it's the same stadium, and although the design isn't my favourite, it shows just how much you can change the look of basically an 80 year old building.

Sir Robert McAlpine and Laing O’Rourke are both eying the chance to build a new 20,000-plus capacity arena in the shadow of Manchester City’s Etihad stadium.

The pair are understood to have been joined by Bam in looking at the job and one source said: “One of us will be successful in that. Everyone is going very hard for that one.”

Los Angeles-based developer Oak View Group launched a consultatation on the £300m plans last week with a second round due to take place before Christmas.

It won’t be bam. Too many issues on the training ground.

Improved transport infrastructure would help City fans, but I can't see any major initiatives at the moment because the City centre seems to me devoid of people, and cars for much of the time. Deansgate, Cross St, Oxford Rd used to be heavily polluted and choked with cars. Manchester has changed a lot, and I don't think many of the people who are contributing in this topic realise this. The Metrolink is growing outwards, but I can't see any growth in the City centre.

If there genuinely is demand for transport then the solution is straightforward, put on more buses. Any commerical operator would seize the opportunity if the demand was there. I don't think it is.

As well as the opportunity to get trains into the city centre, there is another possible destination that could solve a lot of the congestion and travel issues now and into the future...
The route going to Victoria Station actually has a fork not far from the stadium, the other fork goes out towards Ashton, and actually passes through Ashton Moss on its route. This would be a fantastic place to locate a park n ride car park to serve the stadium and arena (as well as the city centre too)
There is absolutely loads of space to build additional car parks there, and it also offers easy access to the M60 too.

Does anyone know, perhaps Prestwich Blue, if we can count revenue from this venue towards football club income (and help with FFP). Presumably this development will make it easier for us to generate corporate income from joint football/music packages, especially if we build a hotel and attract more tourists. We could also use the indoor venue to sell food and drink to City fans on match days ( a sort of deluxe box park set-up). The venue will actually be joined to the main stadium North Stand won't it? This could be a huge advantage for us against our commercial rivals, especially the Rags. What about joint season tickets for music and football? It looks like a game-changer for us.
Yes we can. Although I'd expect that to change once we do start counting it!

We can add revenue from anything we own in the immediate area of the stadium. But we'd have to own it.

According OVG they are funding the arena, not City.

So any income for City will probably be limited to land rent and maybe a small % of the arena revenue, which I doubt very much.

I can’t see City making that much out of the proposed arena.

And you wonder why it's nicknamed the Daily Fail.

Stadium?

They can"t even get that right. Journalist?

Manchester City 'start planning for new £300m, 21,000-capacity stadium to be built next to the Etihad which will hold concerts, NBA games and UFC events'

Well at least they’re proposing some things. City do nothing. OVG are looking at shuttle buses to and from the arena. A number of us have been saying City should put these on for years (well before the Sheikh even came to us!)

What the board members of City and OVG should do is use the Met on a match day just to experience what it’s like both before and especially after games (especially night games). That’s the only way they’ll get a real understanding of what they’re up against.

The transport strategy seems to be to walk, back to Victorian times!

That is correct. Whether you regard that as progress I don't know.

Here is some interesting analysis which confirms your point of view. It's not entirely up to date. My impression is that the number of cars in the City centre has fallen significantly in the last 18 months as the Oxford Rd corridor opened.

Here is a graphic which details projected population growth. See panel on the left regarding the City Centre population.

That is the context for public transport in Manchester and why there is a shift from car to walking and cycling. The crane count tells its own tale. There is a surge in people living, working and studying in the City Centre. Students are moving from Fallowfield into the City centre. That means that the City centre transport in focused less on the car.

This has a knock on effect for CIty fans as we of course use Manchester's transport infrastructure. Basically if you a car driver, then the City council does not really want you (my interpretation not theirs, they want you out of the car, and onto your bike, feet, or the bus).

Potential solution if there is a North Stand Expansion, and transport is an issue in 2-3 years time:

Give Seasoncard holders an option to buy discounted travel on the buses, and make more buses available. Get Stagecoach staff to load more than 1-2 buses at a time.

I am not convinced that there actually is a problem beyond car drivers, and tram users, but if there is, this is what I would do

Sorry if I’m being a bit daft here, but if City aren’t going to make much money out of it why are they allowing it to be built?

I don't know what deals we have with them, but we must get at least half the ground rent, no idea what that is but won’t be peanuts.

It’ll make a whole range of facilities on the site sustainable- such as restaurants, coffee shops etc.... with events 3 or 4 times each week.
