I have been telling people that these things were coming for quite some time.

The first of many.

ABU DHABI -- Manchester City today launched its first ever international School of Football, featuring professional coaches from the Club.

Boys and girls in the UAE can now sign up for the 10-week course, which starts the week of January 15th at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.

The 10-week coaching programme is priced at AED1750. Each of the ten sessions will last 90 minutes and participants will also have access to weekly Football Saturdays to practice their skills in games and competitions. On top of that, each participant will receive a full MCFC replica kit. Sign-up by e-mailing adsof@mcfc.co.uk

Everyone who joins the School of Football before January 7th will have the chance to win an incredible prize to watch Manchester City live in action at the Etihad Stadium. They will meet star players before the big match and even get some tips at the Club’s training ground.

The School of Football will be run on exactly the same principles as the Club’s Academy.

Manchester City FC coaches will be flown into Abu Dhabi to teach young players how to improve their skills in a fun and challenging way.

“We held some sessions with local young players in preparation for the School of Football and I have been very impressed with not only the standard but also with the huge enthusiasm and love for the game,” said School of Football coach Gavin Makel.

“We welcome players of all abilities and everyone will be able to improve their skills and have plenty of fun as they do.

“A lot of coaching we will be doing is the same as that which we do at the Club every day and so boys and girls here in the UAE will be getting genuine Premier League instruction.”

Former Manchester City player Patrick Vieira, who is now the Football Development Executive at the Club, helped Gavin coach the youngsters and was equally impressed.

“At a young age it is so important to have the correct coaching and that is why we are very proud to launch the School of Football in the UAE and help develop players who clearly love the game,” he said.

Emirati players Abdulla Al Khater and Sultan Al Suwaidi, who currently attend the Manchester City FC Academy, helped out at the coaching sessions put on in the lead up to the School of Football launch.

“By properly learning the basics the boys and girls will get to much more enjoyment out of the game and love it even more,” said Sultan.

“Manchester City’s coaches are the best around and they have very high standards. But they always want you to have fun and enjoy yourself and so that is what the School of Football is all about.”

Rani Sahyoun, 15, took part in one of the coaching sessions.

“I always want to play football and from the coaching we have had I can feel myself getting better and learning more skills. I will be using them in games and when I play with friends after school,” he said.

The School of Football is part of Manchester City’s drive to bring football fans and players in the UAE closer to the Club.

They have also launched Sky Blue membership, which is free and comes with a range of benefits for members such as big match screening events in Abu Dhabi and discounts on trips to watch the team live in action at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Those PM promises are too bloody tantalising...painful really given the amount of wanton hope on this (and the original mothership thread)...

Interesting re the bridge...in all fairness, from the images I've seen it's not a million miles away fro the Wilkinson Eyre/Calatrava bridges elsewhere in the city...perhaps the devil is in the scale of it?
Hmm.... doesn't remind me of one of Calatrava bone bridges like the Trinity Bridge over the Irwell or Wilkinson Eyre's bridge in Salford Quays.

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

The bridge isnt part of the contract, they may well get a specialist sub-contractor in just for those works

The Wilkinson Eyre bridges at Castlefield, Piccadilly Station (over London Road), the Hulme arch...they're good bridges and I'm not being miserable...just can't (at this stage) see anything groundbreaking or awe inspiring with the campus bridge (and perhaps it won't need to be as other elements will be flashing their fancy pants).

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

I imagine the owners/council would want to keep the stadium looking like it is still one form rather than that it has had an add-on attached to one end. An outer shell would allow building elements that may not fit in with this concept to be hidden beneath. The owner would be able to put his own individual stamp to the entire stadium not just one stand.

Regarding the ring that supports the roof, it would not be that difficult to create new support towers behind the current location, attach them to the roof ring and then remove the old towers. This would give the space to increase capacity and raise the roof.

It's all guess work but one thing is certain, whatever they do will be a landmark project. Look at other projects in Abu Dhabi and tell me how many do not have the 'wow' factor! ;)

*Well, there's this one :)

Hints of our future expansion perhaps (it's got a firm roof on it).

*It really is hard to find any buildings with little pizzazz in Abu Dhabi...

Have to agree with Kramer. It is not easy at all. That doesn't make it impossible however.
The North and South stands can be given 3rd tiers by taking the current roof off and and putting a new one on - it can't be left in situ and jacked up.
I predict they will take the whole roof off and put a new one on that makes the place look really smart and allows a 3rd tier to be taken all the way round and an eventually a 4th tier to be added above.

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

THe roof could be left in situ on 3 sides IMHO (assuming only one end is to be expanded). The roof is held up at one end by the support ring and the other by the concrete structure. By moving the towers rearwards and increasing their height it allows the concrete supports to be increased in height therefore making space for an additional tier.

With regard to the simple / difficult observation, of course it is not simple nor would I describe it as incredibly difficult proposition either. It is merely another engineering challenge.
