European Super League | ECJ rule that UEFA and FIFA acted unlawfully in blocking Super League (p 29)

Can't seen any law which could prevent a sporting organisation from deciding to play in a competition if they so wish. I don't believe for one second this Government, even if it survives long enough, could bring in such a law. A total restriction of trade. Sounds like the sort of thing that would happen in Russia or China.
Our politicians are fixated on the past. They think the Empire is still in full swing. You can't pretend that globalisation doesn't exist. Perhaps the next revolutionary move from this government will be to try to get Cayman-Islands based MUFC to pay some taxes in the UK. More chance of getting Amazon to pay up.

The Government will block any attempt by Premier League football clubs to join a European Super League after EU courts gave the plans the green light on Thursday.
The European Court of Justice ruled that Fifa and Uefa acted unlawfully by blocking the breakaway league, which has paved the way for some of the biggest clubs in Europe to set up their own big money tournament.
But in a statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, ministers have warned that British clubs will be prevented from joining any such league under forthcoming legislation, the Football Governance Bill.
A spokesman for the department highlighted the Governement’s “decisive action” in preventing the creation of a super league back in 2021, adding the new bill will “stop clubs from joining any similar breakaway league in the future”.

Will Premier League clubs be able to join?

It appears as though Premier League clubs will not be able to join, even if the new proposal does get approved.

The UK government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport released a statement that indicated a bill about to pass into law, which sets up a new independent football regulator, would make it illegal for British clubs to join a breakaway league.

"The attempt to create a breakaway competition was a defining moment in English football and was universally condemned by fans, clubs and the Government,” said a DCMS spokesperson.

"We took decisive action at the time by triggering the fan-led review of football governance, which called for the creation of a new independent regulator for English football. We will shortly be bringing forward legislation that makes this a reality, and will stop clubs from joining any similar breakaway competitions in the future."

The UK is no longer bound by EU law since Brexit, so clubs would not be able to appeal to the European Court of Justice.

==========

Its over. The option is not there unless the clubs are willing to never play domestic footy ever again.

Fuck me, finally there’s one good thing about Brexit

Seems to be a rather circular argument here that the old uefa plus g14 propping out the current decaying edifice versus shiny new 3 tier nonce leagues.......backed by our old friends g14!!

Uefa are shit, incompetent and corrupt, ceferin is as self serving as platini, Blatter and infantino. However City have an ally, currently in him, for our role in torpedoing the esl first time round. I'm sure we're using this influence at the top table, hopefully to set up a reckoning with the cartel.

Of course it's tempting to say fk off to uefa for the active and continuing harm done to us, but make no mistake, the esl pt2 and their masters will be no friends of ours.

It is tempting to advise our 3 shitty red cheeks to fk off to the esl, so that we'd never see them again.....

There are no altruists in this, it is solely about power and money, same as it always was. The sad thing is I think the club are well up for this, fuck the fans.

while SL is lot less valuable without PL clubs or PSG, Bayern CL would also be lot less without top Spanish or Italian clubs.
both would worth lot less to sponsors imo.

there is some very shady deals in the background for Barca and Real which is why they are so SL pro so far.

not surprised that Spanish or Italin clubs in general would consider it, I would go mad as well as CEO of Milan, Roma, Seville if clubs like Burnley or Forest could afford more on transfer spend each year poaching some decent players from them or mangers even.
Let alone the Spanish, Italian equivalents of Burnley and Forest the likes of Empoli, Frosinone and Cadiz, Mallorca.

Cadiz total transfer spend was like 15m pounds last 2 years.
N. Forest: 250m in last 2 years?

this is some of the difference between bottom half clubs.

and then there are Portugal, NL etc other leagues behind the top leagues which also could benefit financially more as their CL revenues are generally lot smaller

Until someone challenges it in a British court.

There's lots they can do, the Home Office can instruct the Police not to Police the game's. Without Police, there's no game because of safety concerns.
Time will tell, but if it was challenged in court and deemed unlawful then I’m not sure they should be blocking it.
Withdrawing police would also take out a large chunk of the police funding.
Like I said earlier in the thread I’m not sure why UEFA get the monopoly on this.
I get protecting the league, them cunts not so much.

I'm not saying I'm in favour of it, for one second, but if such a ruling were challenged in the English courts, and the courts held for the clubs, it doesn't seem to me that the government could then withhold policing from what had been deemed to be a lawful public event. They could be sued by the clubs if anything went wrong, surely? Just as with an unpoliced rock concert.

Whomever runs the league will own the monopoly... better the devil you know rather than the owners of juventus, barca, RM.

Once, if, they get the league that stops them hemorrhaging money, they will change it to a closed shop model. Football would change forever, might be good, might be sad.
