Nothing to do with the “rules as they now stand are foolish” narrative either. The rules are foolish, by the way, if they mean that a ball can brush any part of your arm with your back half-turned and the ball not even be significantly altered in its trajectory and a penalty is given — but that's not the issue here. That penalty was blocked by an upraised arm that had no business being there. It's a penalty in any version of the game that I've followed in more than fifty years. Story. End of.
Well said.

Why is it the case that the referees' assistant can flag immediately for fouls or handball etc. but not offside?
Could it be that the linesman not showing his flag immediately gives var the time to look at the incident and then to decide as to what the best outcome would be for the game.
ie red team go on to score, onside, (liner didn't raise his flag).
Blue team go on to score - offside in the build up. (Other team colours are available!)
(N.B. Perhaps I am over thinking things)
Liner can flag immediately for fouls committed outside the penalty area because the VAR can't get involved. It will stay as an on field decision.
VAR is the problem with a lot of decisions but it isn't going away. I blame all the stupid pundits who slag off VAR every week. It was their constant knocking of the refs that led to VAR being introduced.

I’d like to see the rule changed to an indirect free kick in the box for accidental handballs except when it’s a shot on goal or inside the six yard box where it would be a penalty. It would get rid of all this unnatural position bullshit.

Last night was rightly a penalty, no doubt, by any rule past, present or future.
Feels like a good idea but your just going to change the debate to was it accidental or deliberate.
What about changing the law to if it hits an arm it's a penalty? No debate even for Sean Dyche

This. Cant get my head round why posters are saying no pen. He blocked a shot with his arms raised. Id be asking for a pen for my sons u9s team for that.

Photo on the sky news sports app showed the ball hitting him under the arm. Cunts. It initially hit his wrist area but they didnt show that
