everyone get out alive??

Very fair and accurate evaluation Jimbo.

It's a shame because the place certainly has potential and the food was unreal but who wants to visit a city that you can't feel safe in while enjoying a beer or two in the evening?

Not for me, I won't be in a rush to go back

Had a great time in Naples got back on Wednesday, My experience was if you did your best to fit in & kept yourself to yourself you should have been fine. Had a good walk round the centre on Monday when we arrived at 5 O’clock and enjoyed a good few pints before the match on Tuesday. Thought the police escort was excellent although it did seem we were on that bus forever... The atmosphere at the match was second to none and well worth going to experience. Very bad organisation when we were dropped back off at the port after the match with the lack of taxis. Felt very unsafe walking down the street towards the station trying to wave down a cab. Saw the ultras being chased down a side street by the police and a car full of them drove past us 3 or 4 times waying us up, thankfully we flagged a taxi down and got back to the hotel safely. There’s no doubting the City is unsafe for football fans after dark but anyone going to the Naples match should have been fully prepared for this, this is what being in European competitions is all about & I personally go to experience these cultures as well as for the football. It was certainly not a place to go on an all dayer as you had to keep your wits about you all the time & fans going over there expecting that should stick to away games like Villareal. It’s clear the city of Naples has a lot of problems and is a million miles away from what we call a civilised society like Manchester. Immigration seems to be a massive problem there, but who are we to say there way of life is wrong? What’s wrong is unprovoked violence with knifes & if this did happen the real fans of Naples & the club should do their best to rid these people from their club. The Neapolitans I met were friendly & welcoming & it’s a shame as always the bad ones grab the headlines. I won’t be going to Naples again in a hurry but if we were to play them again there would have no problem going back. All the City fans I came across were a credit to the club.

I got back last night and must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the two and a half days I spent in Napoli (apart from the game, that is!).

The traffic is an absolute nightmare and you certainly need to look in all directions before venturing across any street. One of the most surreal things I've ever witnessed was on the bus from the airport to the centre on the Tuesday morning. There were cars parked illegally on both sides, so the driver hooted and hooted. When no-one came to clear the cars, he just shunted one out of the way and then scraped it down the side to get past!

The buses from the port took for ever, as they escorted us right round the city by the ring road (75 minutes for what looked like 4 miles as the crow flies!). I've never seen so many blokes piling off the buses for a well-needed pee when they finally let us off. After the game, they kept us in for far too long and we didn't get back to the port until 12.40. The police then disappeared and left quite a few hundred City fans to make their own way back to their hotels. Not a clever idea.

During the day, Napoli has so much to see. I spent Wednesday morning in the incredible Centro Storico. It's like going back in time 50 years: narrow streets, with all sorts of shops and markets, bars, pizzerias, quaint little courtyards and squares. The other extreme is when you walk down the wide avenues with all the flash trendy shops.

I took the train down to Pozzuoli, a pretty little spa/fishing port, and the contrast couldn't have been greater.

At night, as others have mentioned, there are a few dodgy areas. Around the Piazza Garibaldi there are all sorts of shady characters (locals as well as East Europeans, Africans and Chinese) and it's not advisable to be there, especially after dark.

I had absolutely no problems in all the time I was there (and my hotel was just off the Piazza Garibaldi). Most Napoli fans were great before and after the game. I sat down with some of them on the Wednesday in a restaurant to watch the Milan Barcelona game and they were really friendly. Of course, things might have been different if they'd lost!

The food was amazing (and cheap). If you like pizza you will never have tasted anything like a freshly cooked one (in a wood-fired oven) as they make them in Napoli. The fish and shellfish in Pozzuoli was on a par with some of the best food I've eaten in Spain.

Would I go again? A definite YES. See you next year, Napoli. But next time Cavani will be playing for us!

this is what naples should be known for, the thuggy cunts ruin it and make it a no-go for many people.

It did happen. I was there. Some cowardly Italian mug stabbed a lad in his side. It could have been a lot worse too, had the Police not turned up the other 6 of us could have got stabbed too as about another 12 - 15 turned up on scooters.

Only provocation that we offered was trying to walk back to the hotel after being dropped off at the port.

The Police did well all day until they dropped everyone off at the port, which was then almost deserted with no taxi's to be seen, & left people to get back to their hotels themselves.

As I said in a previous post, it was asking for trouble!

This.

Had a great time, other than the flight back to Stanstead and completely echo raininspain's analysis (including the bad bits). Lovely people, fascinating city and some stunning architecture. Don't know if any of you lot made it up to the Duomo (Cathedral), but probably the most impressive architecture and furnishings I've ever seen. Herculaneam was spectacular as well. Well worth a visit.

Great post, best I have read on this subject. Good point on the immigration aswel, I was more worried around Piazza Garabaldi where it seemed there wasn't that may italians/neapolitans but more african men hanging around.

Certainly not a piss up type place.
