everyone get out alive??

Got back yesterday ourselves. The only time we encountered anything close to hostility was the Monday night late ish on. The 4 of us had been drinking outside a bar (Bluemoon), with 8 or so City. A couple of songs had started, a few "ultras" from a bar down the street came over & told everyone that this was "mastiff" territory & no City songs were to be sung. Within 2 mins another 6 or so of their "fans" came over & just stood there watching us. Atmosphere changed completely. Got back to our hotel down the road, got the iPad out & all we got was posts about Sorrento. How bad was it out there? No more probs whatsoever for the next 3 days at all. Met up with friends at the port on tues to be told they'd been threatened by someone with a knife inside a restaurant. Escort took 75 mins, which ensured everyone was sobering up by the time we got to the ground. Atmosphere was good initially, flares etc. I was a bit disappointed during the match though atmosphere wise (although the locals have whistling down to a tee). Escort back was thankfully the short route, surprised back at the port that there were no taxis about. Walked about 500 yards up the road, saw a hotel & got a cab from there. Love Naples as a city personally ( been twice now ). We just did the tourist bit & kept our heads down really.i know it shouldn't be like this, but not everywhere is like Munich & Villareal.

Was there when it happened & if the Police hadn't turned up this could have turned out much worse.

I'm glad to hear he isn't seriously hurt as the last we saw he was being taken to the hospital.

My impression of Naples -

A beutiful city with some stunning architecture struggling to emerge from a dog-shit & grafitti strewn shroud.

A total contrast from the near war zone of Piazza Garibaldi, to the run down but honest charm of the Spanish Quarter to the affluence of the Piazza Triest e Trento & the Galleria Umberto.

A city who's entire DNA changes when the sun goes down. Normal Neopolitans replaced by rat boys lurking in alleys.

Everyone we met in Naples was charming & welcoming. The bar & cafe owners all willing to show off their limited English were excellent hosts. Restaurant owners proud of their local cuisine. Even the fans we spoke to, whilst passionate about their team, wanted to discuss tactics.

All, however, we concerned about our safety.

However, I think they would have been worried about our safety even if we were normal tourists. The place is awash with lowlife who just appear out of nowhere.
Whilst not being overtly threatening or aggresive, the longer the evening goes on & turns into night, the stronger the undercurrent of potential trouble gets.

Whilst enjoying a beer with a bunch of Napoli fans on Monday night, they all of a sudden told me that I ought to go back to my hotel as it was starting to become unsafe!
I didn't need to be told twice, and started back to my hotel.

A real shame as it could be a really beautiful place. The place needs millions spending on it to renovate the buildings, clean the graffitti & pick up the dog-shit.

I wont be going back.
Quite agree Jim, turned back on a driving tour of Italy many years ago and regretted having to go on this footie trip. City has lots of probs with inf struct and structure itself. They would be better off getting some ancient romans to lay their roads- shocking.
City has a heart however but by night it develops a bad atmos, even tourists off Trip Advisor notice this, not just footie fans.
Won't be going there again but coast is beautiful and Pompeii amazing.
Mates who usually travel declined this one as they'd seen this film[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gomor...h. ++++++++++
