never watched it and to be completely honest dont undestand fully just what they have achived tonight,so in footballing terms give me an example

you see them 3 sticks stuck in the ground at the end of the pitch..well your team has 6 goes to chuck a ball at them and hit them.the other team has a man defending the sticks with a big piece of wood that he uses to stop the ball hitting the little bits of wood.

Not really, think of it as City v United. In 2005 we beat the Aussies for the first time in over 20 years. In 2003 we beat United for the first time in a long long while. That is why a big deal was made of it. This win today is special because they only play every 2 years and the last series we were humilated 5-0 down under.
 
england play australia every 2 years in the ashes, no other teams are in it, they win a tiny urn with the ashes of a wicket from years ago. We won it from nothin, our players played brilliant in the last test.
 
Winning the Ashes means more to Australia than all the gold medals at the Olympics.
