What is the difference between one of these and a xbmc box?

these boxs only use the internet to decode the signal, so you are not streaming all that data.

loads of difference but as far as quality goes thats the most important.

With the standard set-up you only get the Setanta Ireland 3.00pm kick-off - you need a motorised dish & probably a more powerful box to get the Sky Italia & other foreign channels.

not the case mate the box has nothing to do with what channals you get. thats down to dish set up and server provider

I thought the Sky UK dishes were pointed at a specific satellite & the Arab/Italian/East European channels were on a different satellite hence the need for a motorised dish and a more powerful box to power the motor on the dish?

the motor are only about 5v (thinks) on standard motors. the satellite for sky italia is in the same direction as sky uk just further along the horizon, so using a second dish (my set up) or a multiple LNB dish will pick up many more satellites.

Nice one - I'll have a look into that. Thanks Mr Sprout.

No problem, but picking up the sats is only half the battle, next comes the server provider and is he sharing those sats and are the shares live cards or "reshares"

So is it technically theft then?
Yes its exactly theft

i have sky broadband and i watch all the footy i want on it via wiziwig. Would you call that theft?

Neither are theft

A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.

So in basic terms, if I am looking for 3pm games, standard UK sky channels an F5 box would do the job without streaming, where as a xbmc does the same but isn't live stuff apart from footy and the rest is all steamed?

Edit - and I can use the f5 box through my standard satalite dish?

Yes^^^^

the 3pm games are usually the rags or the dippers,as for anyone getting one if your not arsed about pause, recording etc I recommend to get one,ive had one for 18 months now got sick of sky increasing their prices every month

Getting mine this week an can't wait. My Sky subsription gets cut off today after 7 years of paying full price.

Quick question, i've been offered a number of different boxes - I just want one that easy to use/set up etc and can record progreammes. Is the Skybox the best one or are alternatives that are better?

Only disadvantage is you can only record channel your watching, and then the picture is not full screen, for me its the only downside but to be fair not arsed now about recording, have heard a rumour new boxes were you can record a separate channel while watching another are in the pipeline....
