.

You arrive in Qatar.and start your first match ........without this player?

The first match we win 6-2?

He played pretty much the whole game v France

Think people’s obsession that the England manager must play there own team players and shouldn’t be picking any from the rival team is also another reason any England manager can’t win - club tribal mentality bollox

We dominated France apparently.

There are only two questions that should be asked about Southgate.

In a couple of years time, there will be at least 11 players (excluding maybe a goalkeeper for some reason) who can play progressive, attacking, possession football. Is Southgate the right person to develop that talent into a team?

Is he able to change the team and its formation to counteract the other manager's tactics?

I am guessing it would be hard to say yes to both questions. Or either of them.
The truth is that at 0-0 and 1-1, the game was quite tactical and France went looking for goals …….and got them.

At the points where France were ahead, 1-0, 2-1, they sat back a bit more, ceded possession and allowed England to play in front of them.

From my point of view France managed the game really well….

Edit: I would add they did this without 3 or 4 key players too.

So Southgate still couldn't beat a weakened French side.

A standard quote is business or sport or any walk of life when you're relying on team effort is that the sum of the whole should be greater than the sum of the parts.
IMO Southgate has actually achieved the opposite of that in the case of the England team.
On an individual basis we definitely had the best players at this World Cup but somehow Southgate failed to get a tune out of them.
Time to replace him with someone who can.

Expectations:

Southgate has the team competing and progressing to the later stages of tournaments.

Is it enough?

Or with the talent available should England have won a tournament under his leadership?

So if you want to be able to compete but not win then keep him. I personally think he will stay on as he ticks more boxes than not for the FA.

I mean for ffs
Your on the plane going to the world cup..
On that plane you have a young ...two footed genius,an England premier league title winner, playing football for the best coach in the world.

It's a long plane ride home wondering what went Fucking Wrong .
GS is a clown.
I am fuming.

So you're blaming our loss to France on Southgate not picking Foden in the first game that we won 6-2 and regardless of the fact he did pick Foden to play against France and he was pretty anonymous.

It's hard to call. I think in 2018 we weren't good enough to win it with that squad and we got as far as we did through luck of the draw as much as anything. In the Euro's we had to beat a top tier side in Germany (and we don't beat those sides) and managed to get to the final. We were the better team on paper but you could argue the weight of expectation was too much and we didn't manage to execute our game well enough. Southgate definitely didn't do enough, but the players also struggled to impose themselves. Sometimes you lose those games and are better for it.

This time around I think we had one of the best squads on paper and were playing some of the best football. We just met a French team who managed to take their chances where we failed. Southgate got the majority of things right. The starting 11 was right. One thing that was a surprise was how attacking we were. He sacrificed our defensive balance to counter the space behind Mbappe and we were successful and should have done more with that. Morocco also profited last night until Deschamps plugged the gap by switching him central. Henderson was the man he used but unfortunately, defensively Henderson was then missing and it was far too easy for them to get in our final third and create chances.

It's time for a change, but Southgate has been decent even if he's ultimately failed. You win or you're shit. That seems to be the assessment despite our history as a nation. I'm not sure who comes in and does any better, but it's got to be someone who is able to retain the team spirit and continue to give younger players a chance. But maybe someone with a bit more tactical nous. Ultimately, they'll probably be shit as well though.

Due to being stuck on the left wing with no service barring high balls to contest headers with a defender at least six inches taller than him
