It's been a rough ride. For me, the above is exactly why Southgate does deserve some credit. The England job is impossible. We're either embarrassingly shite or we're respectable but still shite whenever we face any opposition with a history of success. Portugal were the first to knock us out of a major tournament (that hadn't won one themselves). Iceland then marked the real despair. Croatia also added their name to the list. Southgate got the benefit of a good draw in the WC. We failed to beat Belgium (twice) and profited with easier games. Croatia was the first test and we lost it. We'd have lost to France in that final anyway though. The Euro's, as you say, he managed what no one had before other than Sir Alf and that was to beat the Germans. But another nation with a World Cup success under their belt came along and that was the writing on the wall. We came pretty close. He's done alright, better than all but 1.
I'm not sure what the answer is. Does another country with a history and love of football like ours have such a dismal record? Italy, Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany...I'm sure they have won some and lost some. But we have lost all but one outside of 1966. That's horrific. I'm not sure how you change that record? It's a weird one that shouldn't impact each new set of players in each new scenario but how can we change it?
