FA Cup Third Round - West Ham (a) 7.55pm Friday 6th Jan

I'm not suggesting chicanery of any kind, but I'm struggling to see 40 consecutive draws against either Premier League or Championship opposition as anything other than extraordinarily unlucky, not least because it means hardly ever resting everyone we'd like to. For the record, since we beat Notts County in 2011 we've drawn:

Villa
Reading
United
Stoke
Birmingham
Wolves
Arsenal
United
Liverpool
Villa
Watford
Stoke
Leeds
Barnsley
Chelsea
Wigan
Wigan
Newcastle
Leicester
Blackburn
West Ham
Watford
Chelsea
Sunderland
Wigan
Sheff Weds
Newcastle
Sheff Weds
Boro
Sunderland
Palace
Hull
Everton
Norwich
Villa
Chelsea
Liverpool
Swansea
United
West Ham

18 home, 14 away, 8 neutral venues

I wonder what the odds on that are lol?

The thing is we could have rested players in plenty of those games but chose not to. As a top 4 club we were expected to beat 90% of the opposition on that list.

The Newcastle league cup game springs to mind as one we could have rested players. Instead of this Silva ends up missing 6 weeks and we get beat by their youth team!

The odds of drawing a prem or championship side is odds on with a 68% probability and that is just in the 3rd round. The probability becomes much higher as the rounds go on.

I think its arguably unlucky but like you say that is all it is. It would have been nice to have had a few new grounds to visit but personally I would not like to see the likes of Silva get kicked lumps out at lower league clubs as some no mark centre half tries to make a name for himself.

Interestingly more at home than away though.

Your determination to naysay the mere suggestion of misfortune having befallen us does make me chuckle. The days of top PL teams coming a cropper on glorified ploughed fields patrolled by centre halves who are part Frankenstein's monster and part King Herod, are largely gone IMO, and the only time a Liverpool or a Chelsea, who both draw lower tier teams at home with astonishing regularity, does lose is usually because they've fielded half a dozen youngsters. I'd rather draw a League Two team than a PL or Championship outfit any day of the week!

I've just checked and the 5th and 6th rounds are the weekends prior to the last 16 CL games. If we get that far we'll doubtless be playing the kids again against good opposition.

Not what I'd do but we might as well play them in this game as well.

It will be much the same this season I'm sure as the CL is everything to the club now. They won't jeopardise progress in that for this competition any more as shown last year so we would have to have a very favourable draw. The trip to Abu Dhabi before the 3rd round the previous year and flying back the day before the game showed how much this means to the owners.

Tough draw, they are capable of beating anyone IF they can get their form sorted out..
Our last 4 cup draws have been Swansea and Rags away FL cup
and Chelsea and now WHU away FA Cup.

In this ever changing world it's comforting to know that some things remain the same. Like City getting drawn away to a Premier League side while the rags, Liverpool and Chelsea get their customary soft home draws. The only surprises are that Everton, though getting their cistomary home draw, have been drawn against a Premier League side and Arsenal, though drawn against a Championship side, have actually been drawn away. That'll be a novelty for most of their players.

Yeah. One of those nearly moments! Ha ha. Was that the year West Ham threw it away when slippy scored that screamer.
That's the one...fourth official had just given time added on then Gerrard scored a 35yard screamer...glad it was against them and not us...Couldn't take another Ricky villa moment in my life at that time..

hadnt Liverpool kicked it out too and West Ham player through it back to them or something like that. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Great goal though from Gerrard.

Our usual shit draw, another decent side away, so yet again we'll either have to play a strong side or go out in the third round while the rags and Chelsea get their customary bye into the next round and rested first teamers.

It's so fucking bent I don't know why the FA don't just admit they need the money from having the rags on TV.

One day, we will overcome all these shit draws in the cup and CL, and we will regularly win everything, and all these corrupt rags and cockneys will be falling over themselves to pretend they actually liked us all along. Until then they can all go and suck monkey dick the fucking dirty cheating rag ****s.
