Don't get this at all, he's just like Kolarov but faster, worse in the air and doesn't score from free-kicks. Therefore the only benefit we're getting is a pacey left back, but we've already got one of those, and he can actually defend.
He is nothing like Kolarov, at all

Other than being a left-sided wing back who likes to get forward, has been criticised for his defensive abilities and is second choice at his current Champions League playing club?
Even so Coentrao's still an upgrade on our current 2nd choice LB which is the point everyone's making. If we can get between £8M-£12m for Kolorov and get the 'left-sided wing back who likes to get forward, has been criticised for his defensive abilities and is second choice at his current Champions League playing club' for £15m or less, I'd be happy with that.

So we're going to complete ignore the way he plays and categorise all players simply by whether they are attacking or defensive fullbacks and whether they are first or second choice at their clubs? Sounds smart. Or, we could be radical and actually watch players and base our opinions on the way they actually play.

Coentrao is not remotely like Kolarov, he doesn't play in the same way at all. The comparisson it completely non-existant. Kolarov is incapable of moving with the ball, he can only cross the ball, shoot or do a Ronaldo chop before passing it backwards. Coentrao on the other hand plays like an actual attacking player, able to dribble, make overlapping runs, exchange one-twos and pick a pass. Not to mention that he is actually very good defensively, despite the bizarre perception that seems to go around that he isn't. They are completely different types of players

no but as a fullback it would help a bit if he could fucking defend well
Which he can do, very well. He is far better than Clichy, in pretty much every aspect (despite some City fans belief that Clichy is a defensive god). I've probably seen Coentrao play 50 times for Benfica, Portugal and Madrid and the only time I can remember him struggling defensively was against Bayern in the CL semi final first leg a couple of years ago, where Ronaldo left him to try and stop both Robben and Lahm and they gave him a torrid time.

This, this and a little bit more of this.

Plus, I’ve seen Kolarov overlap, play one-twos and pick passes out numerous times for us in the past few years. Just this pre-season he overlapped Jovetic to score against AC Milan and overlapped again before squaring for Dzeko to tap in. His passing is very much under-rated, he plays some excellent long balls, forwards, on the floor at times and despite his lack of pace will occasionally take players on (vs Gerrard at Anfield in the 2-2 League Cup semi-final before crossing again for Dzeko comes to mind).

I had however momentarily forgotten that Coentrao used to play for Benfica and of course your (BigOscar) opinion is therefore in no way impartial.

They’re both decent going forward, Coentrao with pace, Kolarov with deliveries into the box, but both suspect defensively, certainly for teams aiming to progress to the latter stages of the Champions League.

I apologize if me having actually watched a player a lot gives me an opinion on how he plays, rather than basing it off random things I've heard other people say and maybe one or two CL games.

why are you apologising? You are clearly entitled to your view, I personally disagree with it as whenever I have watched him he has shown defensive frailties, but I may well be wrong, and you have seen a lot more of him than I have

Wow, am I actually seeing an amicable end to a difference in opinion? This site is going downhill! :)

The fact you’ve seen him play a lot obviously isn’t the problem, as indicated by the fact you wrote it sarcastically. However, the fact you support the team he used to play for, where he was one of the best players, makes me think there’s a pretty good chance you became a big fan of him. Therefore, similarly to the Bosnians in the Dzeko thread you cannot see any flaws in his game and so continuing this debate is almost pointless.

I think Coentrao is a good left back, I just don’t think he’s an upgrade on Kolarov. In the games I’ve seen him, of which admittedly none were live, and the number will be far less than yours, he has looked suspect positionally and seems to lose concentration on occasion, he sometimes makes up for it with his pace but when playing top teams they don’t allow you this margin for error and this is where he gets found out. Kolarov is worse in this respect as he can’t cover his mistakes with pace but he’s better in the air, stronger and more willing to get stuck in (more prevalent in the Premier League than Spain or Portugal). Therefore, in my opinion there’s not much between them and I’d rather keep Kolarov who’s settled in the squad, familiar with our players and offers a more different option to Clichy and save the £10m net spend.

Yeah but to be fair I have more than redeemed myself on the Sinclair to the dippers thread!

I obviously am a fan of Coentrao, as you say, but I am also a fan of city, so I see myself as surely fairly even in bias when comparing him to Kolarov and Clichy (if that makes sense) and I can honestly say I think he is infinitely better than Kolarov, both going forwards and defensively and I personally think he is a better all round fullback than Clichy. His style of play would suit our team a lot better than either of the two we currently have, with his superior interplay whilst still offering genuine width down our left (which is looking like being needed if Silva. Nasri or Jovetic play LAM).

Obviously it's not really working out for him in Madrid, more due to his association with Mourinho than his actual performances, but I'm positive he's going to massively improve whoever he goes to and I just hope it's us. I think he'll probably end up at Spurs under AVB though and make me incredibly jealous that we didn't snap him up when we had the chance!
