Facial recognition.

If you’ve never been arrested, they haven’t got a photo of you. If they haven’t got a photo of you they’ve nothing to compare it to in the event they obtain an image from a crime that has occurred. Chill. If you have been arrested and continue to commit crimes then that’s your look out. A face covering renders the whole process impotent. It’s an absolutely pointless idea.

But that's a completely diiferent issue.

Their faces are on file for a reason and the police have seen fit to choose an area where it may be considered effective either as a deterrent or in actually catching someone.

Maybe it's time to ban face coverings-oh wait, that's Robert Jenryick who wants that.
 
As much as I hate this sorta stuff the ship kinda sailed when everyone decided to post pictures of themselves over social media and share face pictures with those face changing apps. Then biometrics on drivers licence and passports etc.

Your face being linked to you in this way is a done deal.

Live detection is new and a bit iffy but there's no reason they couldn't do that from the thousands of security cameras dotted about already ( assuming high enough resolution ).

the bigger test will be if it ever starts to get used like DNA/Fingerprints in court rather than to try to track someone down.

Or people getting done if they are not in the system etc.

I don't see the problem really. If you are on a watchlist then it's probably for a good reason. If you haven't done anything wrong before then it won't know who you are and won't do anything so it doesn't really matter.

Obviously it's a bit unnerving but the UK has the 4th highest number of CCTV cameras in the world and nobody is bothered about that. The Police are otherwise not interested in your shiftyness whilst picking up a pasty from Greggs.
 
Strangely, I took the dog up to get his anals squeezed and since I was early I had a little wander, the local Wren Kitchens store now has a very small sign next to the door stating that facial recognition is being used. Do they get a lot of people walking out with countertops? Can't see why they'd use it.

I would think pictures the DVLA hold will be next. So yes they do have the photos of most people.

The police are in the habit of photoing witnesses too. On those occasions where they call for all the men in an area to volunteer prints, DNA etc for the purposes of elimination, they keep the material gathered. Worse, if you do not volunteer, they visit you as a witness. Add the proposed i.d. Card and the Stasi society is complete. Oh, and do not say “if you’ve done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear”: see: “In the Name of the Father”, fifteen years those innocent people served for the crime of being Irish. Senior police officers lied but were never held to account.

Wow. Fourth highest in a tiny country like ours. We must have the most surveillance by square mile if that's true.

Maybe an having an authoritian government would remind us what privacy actually means. A bit like in Germany where they had to learn the hard way and now have all sorts of rules on not filming people in public places etc.

If you have a free bus pass, the file contains your photo, name and address and DoB. Not sure who holds the file or accesses it.

I have a relative who deals with this. You would be naive to believe the government /police /Secret Service/mainstream media take on this.

Liberty already has numerous examples where it has been trialled and data (unintentionally of course! ) has been saved.

If you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear from facial recognition surveillance systems as fortunately our legal system ensures that no innocent person is ever falsely charged / incorrectly convicted / serves time in prison for something they never did.
