I don't think Kings had an entrance exam.
If you could walk upright and had opposable thumbs, then you were in.

That only applied to locals; if you were from Wilmslow, you had to take a test. It was harder than the one for Stockport.
The one for Stockport involved being able to walk upright I believe. Though they weren't that strict.

They liked a bung though, apparently; at least that is what my mother told me recently! Might explain why, thankfully, I didn't go there.

Loads of rugby players, maybe 30-40 professionals over the years and many more to come (Three from my school now involved in Welsh under 20s). Plenty of British lions too, including Ieuan Evans.

Other than that Rhod Gilbert and the Go compare man although long gone by the time I was there.

Mick Hucknall (Say no more!!!)
Michael Clegg (Ex Red player Say no more!!)

Eric Evans England rugby union captain in the 50's
Dean Schofield played for Sale Sharks a few years ago and was a year above me.
Stephen Parry Lancashire cricketer

I think that's a lovely, tactful way for your mother to explain away failing the entrance exam, although I'm sure all old Stopfordians are equally thankful you went elsewhere.
Some of us got direct grant places, as our parents were potless - probably not a concern for you posh folk from Wilmslow, who could flourish a cheque book in the place of intelligence.
Kings was universally known as 'third choice' within the educational system, which I always considered to be extraordinarily generous, as there are far better comprehensives around.
Was Ian Curtis in your year?
It would explain a lot.

Can I turn this into - what school did you go to? So disappointed that no one posts from my school :(

What school did you go to?

It doesn't even exist anymore - you are going to laugh at the name of my school though it was Yew Tree High :(

Was it renamed Savile Secondary, or Stuart Hall High?

Yew Tree High was in Wythenshawe IIRC a mate of mine went there.

My Missus went to School with Chris Bisson, his cousin was a good friend of mine, my sister went to school with Jason Manford.
