Favourite 70’s and 80’s cars

Loved that car. Asked my Dad what it was and he thought that it was some sort of fancy Italian make. My brother knew what it was though.

Back in the early 1980's I had a 1958, 2 door Moggy Minor that didn't actually have doors as such, 2 seats only, re bored 1275cc A series out to 1380cc, twin Dellortos, mostly fibre glass mouldings rather than the steel wings etc etc.Took me about 18 mths to get it on the road and only one insurance co. would insure it.

Owned an RS
Liked the HLS
Wanted the Lotus Sunbeam

Such vehicles of beauty zandvoort.

I was a big fan of Airikkala in the Chevette, which created a lot of rivalry with my brother who was a big Mikkola/Wilson fan and the RS.

The RS was a cracking machine and I was fortunate enough to navigate in many club rallies in one.

In the real world my favourite car without question was a green Opel Ascona 1.9.......complete with Super Oscars, which I still have. I absolutely thrashed that baby wherever I went (rural living) and it took it without complaint. Only tyres and brakes, which were a regular replacement, but never any other issues. A real workhorse of a machine.

I ended up hitting a flock of sheep one night doing just under a ton and that unfortunately ended her career, but up until then I had some fun driving my little sweetheart.

The fantasy car was a Lotus Esprit and I almost bought one, but I guess the gods were looking down on me and stopped the sale going through. I didn't realize how lucky I was to avoid that at the time.

Was watching Car SOS the other night (feck knows what channel) and they did one of these. The V8 sounded bloody lovely actually.

Some years ago (late 90s maybe early 00s) I was offered a swap on my Saab 900 V6 against a Jensen Interceptor convertible. Turned it down as I needed a daily. I could cry now. Similar mid 00s I saw a Ford Escort S1 RS turbo with 70k miles for £1,500 debater buying it…never did. Like fishing stories I guess - the ones that got away.

That was a big fish!!!

My dream car once upon a time. Fuck you Magnum.

I’ve been lucky enough to go out in a 288 GTO and wasn’t star struck with it. Don’t get me wrong very nice, not for the shy and retiring types, but for the cash I wasn’t blown away.

I was offered the chance to take a Ferrari 308 GTSi out for a spin when I was a young 'un, but declined. Thought, "God, what if I prang it?".

I don't have many regrets in life, but that would be one of them.
