And speaking of principles, perhaps any of you lurking FCUM fans would like to tell us all what Swampy thinks of the proposed new stadium. He's the bloke that does the FCUM radio commentary and is an ardent animal rights activist. So much so that he was part of the group that got the 1993 Grand National abandoned, and would no doubt be fervently against a new stadium being built on that site.....if it didn't involve FCUM of course..

What's the betting that his principles have conveniently gone flying out of the window and he's all in favour of it?

No idea if it is the same bloke who got the national abandoned, but someone claiming to run FCUM Radio is on the Manchester Green Party facebook page (as I was, being a Green voter). I was trying to drum up support from the Green Party prior to the May council election and the FCUM Radio man came on saying the ''community benefit from the development out weighs the environmental issues''.

I asked him if Tesco wanted to build on the site, offering to employ around 100 people, would he support that development because 100 jobs to local people would be of community benefit. His reply was that ''Tesco is not a 'not for profit' organisation'' so therefore he would oppose that......

So in short, he loves the Green politics and saving the planet - just not the green space where he wants his football team to play. Lets get the concrete out for that car park lads!

Oh, apologies..... it isn't a car park, it is (I kid you not) a ''community forecourt''!!!

I had a peek at that Facebook page this morning and I assume the bloke you're talking about is The Mancunian Candidate? If so, it's not the same person as "Swampy" but both are indeed involved in FCUM radio.

I don't personally know The Mancunian Candidate but I find his "'community benefit from the development out weighs the environmental issues'' excuse totally and utterly laughable. From what I can gather, the community benefits are minimal. And besides, how can anyone accurately gauge if the community benefits outweighed the environmental issues? What a crock of shit!

I'd also be inclined to tell him that, like Tesco, FCUM are not a "not for profit" organisation and point out to him that if they were then they wouldn't have pissed all their so-called principles up the wall when taking ESPN's money in return for live screening of their FA Cup tie at Rochdale last season!

The truth is that if it was any football club other than FCUM that wanted to build a stadium on that site, but one that offered exactly the same "community benefits" as FCUM's proposal, then the likes of The Mancunian Candidate and his sidekick Swampy would be vehemently opposed to it.

Yeah that's him.
I was really annoyed with the Greens. Each election i was one of the 26 voting for them in my ward / constituency and when a real Green issue arose for them to knock on doors and generate support, they were nowhere to be seen.
I emailed the chairman prior to the election, asking for support and said I'd knock on doors etc. The reply was they wanted to see the proposals in full first. I replied that what proposals are there that he isn't aware of... a 5000 capacity stadium, 200 plus car park (sorry, community forecourt) is being planned.... what more do you need to know? Plus, conveniently, the plans were not being released until after the council elections!
In the end, the Green Party contacted both sides and offered to ''broker a compromise''. The objectors rightly told them where to go. Lets see now..... they want a 5000 capacity stadium.... objectors dont want that...... so lets compromise and build a 2500 stadium??
Idiots, there could be no compromise! It's alright the Greens being active in trendy Hulme and Chorlton, but they need to get out into the real world and support other areas if they ever want to be a credible party and not just seen as a middle class talking shop.
What the Greens should have been doing (in my opinion ;) was pressurising the council to look for an alternative site, more suitable (ie not in as densely a populated residential area and preferably on a brown field). That was the compromise...... FCUM get their stadium (and best of luck to them), residents get to keep the field green.

Had a look at their website and was surprised at the commercialisation of it already. Links to sponsorship of everything, corporate hospitality offers and even a weekly draw (nothing like encouraging a bit of gambling).

All in all, it's about money, money, money and not football, football, football.

Seems like a principle has given way to a get-rich-ego-trip.

It was always about money and ego with those who run the club.

Never doubt that they're very clever people. They saw a gap in the market and have played it to the maximum.

At the level the mini-me rags play at, the Chairman or Chief Executive gets paid expenses... the ones that run the FCUM's are on a right good wedge of circa £30k per annum... allegedly.

But at least it keeps his slapped arse face off the telly, pontificating about how their "One Love" club was making a fortune out of the gullible support, so maybe a price worth paying...

£30,000 per year? Is that right???? Their main man is on £30K????
A big case of ''All FCUM members' are equal. But some are more equal than others''
What a bunch of suckers funding that salary! Mugs!

Moston Liberation Front said:

One of the last descendents of Ronald Johnson – the man on whose playing fields FC United plan to build a 5,000-capacity stadium – has contacted town hall chiefs to oppose the plans. The relative, one of two remaining great nephews, wrote to Manchester council to say he and his family ‘stand opposed’ to the proposals.

The news comes after town hall bosses approved the £4.6m project – which includes plans for a public medical room and other community resources. The Ronald Johnson fields, in Moston, were bequeathed to the people of Manchester. It is understood at least part of the site was placed under a covenant requesting it be reserved for community recreational use.

Some people who live in the surrounding area have fought a campaign against the stadium. But a public consultation carried out by the council suggested most people who expressed a view were in favour of the plans. The great-nephew’s letter – seen by the M.E.N. – expresses surprise that the authority has not contacted a member of the family for their thoughts on the planned stadium. The relative, who lives in Cheshire, writes that the land – on which the Richard Johnson, Clapham and Morris wireworks once stood – was handed over by the family to benefit those who lived nearby. He adds that those people are ‘in the main firmly against the proposed stadium’ and concludes ‘after careful consideration we also stand opposed’. The relative, who does not want to be named, claims in the letter to be a spokesman for the entire family. But the M.E.N. has contacted a second great-nephew, who said he felt it ‘inappropriate to support or oppose’ the plans because he lives in Kent. He added that, now planning permission had been granted, he wished the project well – and hoped the Ronald Johnson name would be retained in some form.

FC United are completing legal formalities before work can start. The club declined to comment on the letter. But Neil Fairlamb, head of sport for Manchester council, said: “The council is satisfied there is no legal reason why the scheme, which will provide extensive community benefits to Moston and North Manchester, should not go ahead. A descendent living in Cheshire, came forward saying they opposed the scheme. "We have contacted him and offered to meet to explain the plans. He was offered a number of potential dates but he was unable to make these.”

The club hope to be in their new home for the start of the 2013/14 season.

The memory of fallen soldier Ronald Johnson has been kept alive for 90 years - thanks to the playing fields named in his honour. Johnson – whose family ran a wireworks near the park – lost his life in the trenches of World War I aged 27. After a high-flying education he had originally taken up a job at the family firm's Australian outpost. But when war broke out he returned to the Britain to enlist and was signed up to the Royal Field Artillery 23rd Division. He said he wanted to fight alongside the men who worked in his family's factory. After surviving a bullet in the Battle of the Somme he returned to the front line, but was killed in action in May 1917. He is buried at the Brandhoek military cemetery in Belgium. His will requested that the fields in Moston be purchased for the factory's workers - and in 1922 they were opened in his name.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I received an email earlier from a friend about this who was at the planning meeting when the development was approved. My friend said that during the meeting Moston Councillors Paul Murphy and Rita Tavenor and FCUM's Andy Walsh all stood up and said that the family of Ronald Johnson was supportive of the development.

I wonder if any of the wonderful FCUM readers of Blue Moon (AndyFCUM??) can confirm if this is correct, assuming they were there, or if they can ask someone from FCUM who was there, if they can confirm it / deny it.
Seems strange that FCUM refused to comment on the subject (if what my friend says is correct).
