So, from this, I'm assuming that all the internationals that occur during the course of an actual season (i.e. those that don't happen in the June to August period) Ferdinand will be unavailable for, as he'll be in the midst of some form of pre-planned preparations for United?

There's no reason for Hodgson to be sucking up to Rio, he's in his mid 30's, he's missed 2/5ths of United's league games this season, he's not the player he was, he can't play regularly and needs a strictly adhered to training regime. Fuck him off and go with younger options, who can actually show up for a couple of matches in March.
