It’s been a terrible idea to play him at centreback - his work in midfield has been the most important element of the defence over the past two seasons; with the current defensive injuries, he needed to be in front of it providing a barrier and preventing counter attacks with his mobility and tactical fouling BEFORE the opposition gets to the makeshift back line.

He’s played very well out of his natural position. I will never blame him for the new tinkering role in any way, shape or form.

We have no other choice even when stones is back ottamendi has been awful and im not sure we should be playing him at all now

Couldn't agree more, and said as much multiple times in the pre-season when almost everyone on here started to pigeonhole him as a CB. You don't move a guy who's genuinely world class in his natural position just because Pep did it with Javier Mascherano once upon a time.

That being said, with injuries to two centre halves, Kompany gone, and Otamendi proving to be a complete liability, we don't really have much of a choice atm unfortunately.
