It’s been a terrible idea to play him at centreback - his work in midfield has been the most important element of the defence over the past two seasons; with the current defensive injuries, he needed to be in front of it providing a barrier and preventing counter attacks with his mobility and tactical fouling BEFORE the opposition gets to the makeshift back line.
So who should we have played at CB?

We have no other choice even when stones is back ottamendi has been awful and im not sure we should be playing him at all now

Garcia (I’d prefer THB but it obviouslt won’t happen under Pep) with Otamendi and Fernandinho protecting them would be far more solid, or even a back 3 of Walker, Garcia/Rodri sweeper and Otamendi.

The capacity to tactically foul is what defines Fernandinho - the difference between him being a good player, and the great one of the past few seasons. In defence, when he’s the last man, you neutralise that element of his game to the detriment of the team.

Rodri, for all of his quality on the ball, is a massive downgrade in that regard, so with him being seen as the long term anchor, the defence is going to have to be upgraded - leftback especially - because they’re going to have do a lot more work without Fernandinho making them look competent.

He is 34 and has flogged himself to death for us for years,he can't continue in the middle, rodders is his heir but give him a break as well as he has only been here a couple of months

Fern has been great as a CB and Rodri has been absolutely BRILLIANT as a DM.
Any loss was in spite of those players playing in those positions, not because.

His replacement could/should have been someone equally mobile and capable of preventing counters - it’s no coincidence that the two most effective midfield destroyers of the modern Premier League era have been Kante and Fernandinho. Rodri is more of a Jorginho, and Gundogan was already capable of playing that role.

The fact you can only name dinho and kante proves they are a rare breed,we can't find another clone of dinho, rodders has literally been here a couple of months, you have no idea how he will develop, you don't seem to have any positive views on the players so far, please do not mention rodders and jorginho in the same sentence, thats an insult

People are forgetting Fernandinho's age when they talk about him as DM. Merlin plays in less physically demanding position and it's almost a year since his age is being felt on the pitch. It was very right time to introduce Rodri and extend Fern's football with CB position, we should be happy Rodri is doing very well since the start. He obviously isn't as good as Fern in some areas, but it could be lot worse.
