I feel sorry for Porto but they knew he was entering the last year of his contract and had plenty of time to thrash out a deal! And Fernando isn't a traitor for leaving the club, If he can get better money elsewhere he would be a fool not to at least check it out, I not up to speed with why he turned down the new deal but it could be any number of things. Porto now have a choice sell him, try to get him to change is mind or let him rot in the reserves( which is a lose lose btw bad press, bad for team sprit, cost the team a transfer fee, cost the team on wages for a player not being used, first team becomes weaker and will put potential signs of coming) Can he not buy out the last 6 months of his contract?

No,because he has a 30M€ fee. years ago Paulo Assunção (also DM) did that and since that time every player from Porto has a fee (30/40/60M) to prevent that situation
