Fickle fans

I have watched our beloved blues for many many years and i believe i became entrenched into the general feeling about City. Good old City, plucky little City, the joke club who made people laugh, the club who famously would win cups for cock ups. I bought into this and in some ways revelled in it, i liked the fact City were liked i enjoyed the fact many fans saw us as the real club living in the shadows of the great satan. I became accustomed to living the role of supporting the underdog, this made defeat and underachievement acceptable and so acceptable it became the norm. Defeats hurt of course, but it was easy to hide behind the mask of its just a small part of the big day out, a grand social occasion with other self deniers who proudly sang "we never win at home and we never win away". That summed us up, we were liked for being us, we were lauded for our passion and attitude, we were admired for our loyalty to a cause that everybody but us could see as pointless. The press and media were nice to us, we were no threat, we were funny, how the press laughed at us singing to Mourinho "that coats from matalan". Other fans liked us, those wacky Mancs with there bananas, silly songs and self deprecating humour, it was as though we knew our place and we blindly accepted it.

Now putting recent events into the perspective of the above, i should by rights be appalled that all i thought we were has gone, we have become hated by the people who admired what we once were, we are villified from pillar to post across the football world, we are no longer the plucky little underdogs who know there place in the games pantheon. And you know what i absolutly love it, i have never experienced it before but im getting used to it as i realise the reasons peoples attitudes to us have changed is because City has changed, we are now the club many fans want there club to be and dont think they dont. This has created pressure on us though. I understand people getting frustrated, im mates with toffee balls who posts here and he is a nightmare and always has been.

I dont think we are fickle, we have endured much and gave lotsw for next to nothing, now all we need to do is keep the faith a little longer :)

We score when we want makes me want to scream, we wanted to score last night and we did nt could nt. shite song fuck it off
Just to be a pedant for a minute, we scored twice, away at Liverpool, maybe it should have been that we didn't want to concede ?

Anyway.

I don't think I've ever felt so comfortable watching City, I feel no stress whatsoever, I've been at most of the games that have halted our progress briefly this season, I was disappointed with them all, but as soon as the game was finished I looked forward to our next win, which was mostly the next game up. I'll be disappointed if in 6 games time we are not at least 6 points clear in the league, but hey if its only 4, 3, 2 or 1 I'll manage to cope. Usually by now we're looking at how we will get the next 15 points to get to 40, a point a game now gets us to 70, 1 1/2 gets us to 78, and 2 per game gets us to 86, so far we are averaging nearly 2.5, if we manage that we get 93 points, and if anyone gets more than the last 2, then they'll deserve to have beaten us.

Compared with you, OP, I'm a 'new fan who knows fook all.'

But your argument, in some parts, is crap, because it sounds like your saying;

"We can't be anything but thankful 100% of the time because we used to be shit."

Bollocks to that. I've seen how we can play when we're on form, so when we're not on form, I'll say it. When we're playing crap, I'll say it. Don't lump all the critics in with hysterical drama queens that make threads calling our players every name under the sun because that isn't the case. Some of us just call it how we see it. And that doesn't make us rags.

........I am dumbfounded by some of the nonsense I read about things at City.

Note, in my FIRST LINE, I prefaced that comments by saying "SOME" people. If you saw yourself as one of the people I was addressing, that is not my fault.

As to the cogent points you made, which I excerpted above, I have NEVER said that anyone who is nervous about the future or frustrated by some of the things they see on occasion is a rag, a numpty or anything else derogatory. I feel those exact same things on occasion! I have LIVED "Typical City," so I am constantly waiting for the bottom to fall out! However, I am seeing, and I quoted, mounting evidence that we are putting that monicker to bed...hopefully FOREVER!

And, I object to any notion that someone who has "only" been a City fan for the last year or twenty years "knows fook all!" For all I know, you could be the most intelligent, tactics savvy, football fan to ever grace the Etihad or Maine Road. I don't know you, which is why I PURPOSELY did not PERSONALIZE my comments to anyone. I PURPOSELY said "SOME" because there ARE SOME.

I want City fans to realize that we are on the cusp of greatness that has eluded us, even in the halcyon days of black and white TV, and that the nervous energy associated with being on the cusp can be better channeled towards our team than endless threads denigrating players, screaming garbage about them from the highest hill, or coming on this Forum (which is quoted in the media as representing City fans' feelings) to do it is not what is needed.

Yes, we ALL feel the pressure of having such a great season to this point, but having nothing to show for it yet. We ALL feel the pain of losing to United at our place, even with only 10 men. We ALL feel the pain of fighting back to a winning position at Anfield and giving it up to a Bellamy goal.

However, NONE of that speaks to the issues I raised about SOME PEOPLE being so fickle as to open the floodgates of derision towards a team that has taken us to some of the highest heights most of us have ever seen.

Now is the time for strength, fortitude, resolve and unity. THAT is my message, in the face of derision from SOME who appear to have forgotten where we were in 1998-99.

CTWD.

And, before I forget to say it.....

EXCELLENT discussion and viewpoints! One of the things that HELPS MAKE US City fans is our ability to accept others, have a sense of humor about our foibles, and to believe in tomorrow.

I BELIEVE!

I remember the 4.3 defeat to the scum and how i was knelt in front of the tele ,how bad i felt when Owen appeared and scored the winner in Fergie time,i was on my knees and devastated . I turned around to see my young Son in tears and had to gather myself quickly. i uttered those words "its only a game " , i held him and told him to be proud to be a blue, that was the kind of game we will see more often,a game that actually means something , these are the games we want to be seeing , big games , hard games some we will lose and some we will win. I calmed him down i gave him a bag of crisps , i then calmly volunteered to go to the shops , i drove of and screamed my fooking head off ,its only a game my arse . After i felt better and realized i never screamed in the car in the Pearce years and pondered why,i believe it is because of hope , i had none then i kept the faith as did my boys , but hope produces more passion and i think thats the answer. We need to show more passion and belief in our team and channel our energy's i n the right way ,we are City that will never change, haters will hate we will support our team come what may and keep hoping.

Great post R

surely people can see its a matter of progression. after doing little for years we grab a dodgy thai and the club is suddenly high profile and not for very
good reasons. then suddenly we get lucky. now we have won our first trophy since 76, met the best the league has to offer and flourished. yes there are times when we were expected to do better and didn't, cl being the main example. although 10 points is normally more than enough. we are at the top of the most competitive league in the world. patience is a quality we have generally had in abundance, just a little more is required now. we are in the times we only dreamed of.
