Ono, you have either
A. Not played Fifa 11 on a next gen console or
B. Blinded by some form of loyalty you hold to a football game.
I don't care about the name on it; i'll just play whichever i think is best. For a good few years now thats been FIFA.
PES hasn't had the depth FIFA has had since around 07/08... this year i'd put FIFA's graphics ahead of PES, which never used to be the case (except in PES replays which are better than both in game).
If you think FIFA 11 is a "pick up and play" game then you're either playing on amateur or extremely ignorant.
When i say 'pick up and play' i'm talking about fluid the movement and animations are and how this is likely to appeal more to a casual gamer than PES probably would - not that i'm claiming all Fifa fans are casual gamers, because they're obviously not.
I think because of how unrealistically fluid Fifa is, it would be impossible to go from playing a lot of Fifa to automatically enjoying PES11, because PES11 has a different learning curve, and in my opinion, a much deeper learning curve.
For the record, i've been a fan of both games over the years and for the last 3 years i've caved in and ended up buying both games, although in each of the last 3 years Fifa has actually been my first choice (08,09,10).
In fact, if you can be arsed (i can't) there is quite a big post probably from around this time last year where i applauded how good Fifa was and i moaned about how shit PES. That was after i'd spent 2 years thoroughlly enjoying Fifa08 and Fifa09 on the PS3.
However the enjoyment stopped with Fifa10. I actually put a lot of time doing some editing work on Fifa10 for the EA community over on the Fifa forums, just to make Fifa10 playable. The editing did make it quite enjoyable, but it was only really useful if all i wanted to do was play exhibition matches...

It's all incredibly geeky, but i hope you now understand that i have no blind loyalty in either Ea or Konami. Like you, i will simply buy whichever game i like best.
So me not enjoying Fifa10 lead me to buy PES10. My initial reactions were similar to yours for PES11, and to be honest, even for me it was hit and miss. It felt very robotic and the animations were poor. However i could see what Konami were trying to do. They were trying to replicate a simulation where certain players had very different abilities to other players. They simply made a mess of implementing it.
After a while you get used to how different players respond, and you know how you can take an extra touch with and who you can't take an extra touch with. It's good because it forces you move the ball an awful lot. It forces you play to realistically, where with Fifa10, i honestly felt like i was trying to make the game realistic by unneccesarily passing the ball around.
So anyway, after half enjoying PES10, i decided to buy Fifa WC on the ps3, purely to play it manually. I'd never put any effort into learning to play manually, so i thought maybe i should try. Again, there are plenty of posts on here of me asking for manual players to play online against.
Truth be told, i enjoyed manual, but i could only really play on Professional. On world class, the opposition AI was far to aggressive with tackling, and this wasn't helped by the fact that the game was even faster than Fifa10, which was far too fast (even on slow). All in all though, i quite enjoyed it, and i even managed to get Slovakia through a full qualifying campaign right through to the second round of the world cup, which is an achievement in itself on manual.
But the novelty of the world cup wore off when the new season started, and the many problems that bugged me with Fifa10 were still in existence....
The instant control
The gliding on top of the pitch feel
The horrendous ball physics (especially the through ball that keeps on rolling forever)
The over aggressive rugby tackling AI
And lastly, the ridiculous speed of the game
They're all gamebreakers for me i'm afraid. I can't see how a game can be realistic when it has all of the above faults. That's without mentioning the individuality, which while it may be there (Terry is different to Messi), it just doesn't have the depth of PES10 or 11's individuality.
So i downloaded the PES11 demo, and hand on heart, it's probably the best football game i've ever played, and that includes Pes 5 and 6, and even Fifa09 which i have to throw in there purely because i played it for a full year.
It's far from perfect, but the basics are spot on. The pace of the game is fantastic. Passing and dribbling is a joy, defending is solid, shooting needs some work, but it can be great. The tactical options are out of this world, and the AI is very good, once you understand how to tweak tactics properly. There's just a real sense of satisfaction from putting a few passes together that isn't there with Fifa11.
I say will player switching is poor, and the goalkeeping animations are poor, and i've no doubt that the commentary will be shockingly bad, but all in all it plays more realistically than any other football game.
I've tried to like the Fifa11 demo, but it's just not for me. I'm not seeing any depth. The Pro-Passing is still quite poor. My pass success rate is still in the late 80's early 90's. Personality Plus is in effect, but it's only really noticeable when there is a massive technical gulf between players. The collision system is still terrible.
It has it's good points and the fact that it feels a little slower is a good thing, as it means it will have some manual potential if i decide to buy it. But for now, i'm not seeing any worth in it. There's serious issues that need to be addressed. They're probably issues that don't bother you or many others, but for me they are gamebreakers.
It's nothing to with ignorance or anything like that. It's pure opinion, and after sampling both games for the last god knows how many years, i much prefer the direction in which Konami are going.
