Doesn't help that many of our best athletes grow up specializing in american football, basketball, baseball, etc. A country our size should have a much better national team than we do but the popularity hasn't been there in past generations. It is starting to swing a little bit though.

Think it all comes down to money. More young kids player soccer in North America than any other sport but by the time they get into High School and certainly in the Colleges and Universities the major funding goes into American Football and Baseball. At the pro level MLS players make very little money compared to Hockey, Football and Basketball players.
