FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

I know this isn't specifically aimed at me, but I just want to be clear here, I'm not excusing her at all. She was a dickhead.

However, all she did was stand on Alozie. She didn't exert extra force. There was pretty much no chance of it injuring her, it just would have been uncomfortable for a second or two.

For me 'violent conduct' has to be something deliberate (it was) which could injure a player (it couldn't).

She should not be excused as she could have cost her team the whole tournament with one petty action. But that doesn't mean she should be banned for the rest of the tournament either. Whether the manager should trust her enough to pick her again if we get to the final is another matter. I'd like to think that if we get through 2 games without her, the players who get us there deserve to be involved in the final, not her.

Mate, I like you, but half your post is like an oxymoron!

By the mere notion of 'just standing on someone' one must exert force that wasn't that before, especially as she was in a prone position! There was space around her, she could step into, as we've seen many a time before when players come together!

That, in itself, means it WAS deliberate and, therefore, violent! I think if the tourney was longer, she'd have gotten the full ban. To me, 'degrees' of violence shouldn't be a thing as you can't halfway house this kind of action or you'll see young players thinking it's okay as it's not too deliberate! Isn't she supposed to be a role model??

It should be a ban or no.

No problem with your view on this at all mate. Regarding young watching fans though, I'm sure the red card and knowing that the team might well lose because of it is enough to put them off copying her.

Watching it live I was surprised how many times the ref watched the replay of the incident. The only thing I could think she was doing was deciding if it was 'just standing' or a stamp. It was pretty irrelevant either way as yes it should be a red card.

Thinking about it, I know I'm being picky on this, but I just don't think it was 'violent conduct'. More 'unsporting behaviour'. If that carried a three game ban I'd have no problem with it, but it doesn't. (So yes, my whole issue is with the wording really!)

It's a bit similar to the times players get sent off for a push in the face. Shouldn't do it, it's dickhead behaviour, but it really isn't 'violent'. However everyone just spouts 'you can't raise your hands like that' and accepts that's how it is.

Anyway. Let's hope she gets to sit out the semi-final, we win, and also that Wiegmann then leaves her on the bench in the final.

Some people can't tackle. Some put in bad tackles on purpose. Using moral relativeness does not excuse her.

She stood straight up and purpose put her boots into Alozie's body. She could have avoided doing it. She didn't because she wanted to step on her.

Simply because there is an effort to make her the new face of the Lionesses is not a reason to make excuses for her by anyone.
I couldn't care less whether she's the new face of the Lionesses or not. I just don't think she needs making an example of or what she did was that serious. It just wasn't as easy to disguise as much worse stuff that goes on. I dont really think a three game ban would be any more of a deterrent than a one game ban. The damage her sending could have done on the day and the fall out in the days afterwards would be deterrent enough if that's what people want. Missing the next two games is a huge loss for her and ample punishment I'd say.

Fuck off Sweden.

Sweden by far the better side so far, Japan struggling to keep the ball and Sweden looking dangerous. Great save by the Japanese keeper earlier, has just about kept them in with a shout.

Got to say, for all the joking about female keepers, the 2 in this game have had fantastic tournaments so far.

That's not a penalty! What the fuck is she supposed to do?

The ball comes in at an angle so the Japan defender jumps to head it. A Sweden player then heads it mid-flight and changes the trajectory. Then it just hits the Japan defender's arm. No offence has been committed there. It's nonsense.
