Fighter Jet Over South Manchester

Must be fun at Manchester today. Last night a Thomson 787 lost an engine on route from the Dominican Rep and diverted to the Azores. Recovery aircraft sent today to get the passengers.

was on one of those only last week! surely they can fly on one engine?

Yes, that's why they are allowed to carry 300 passengers over 4000nm of water. But if an engine fails then you must proceed to the nearest en-route alternate before the other one does!

Should be able too, but if they were well west in the Atlantic and the Azores was an option, then it makes sense to land, there's a lot of sea between there and the next land.

Also I presume "lost" meant it had to be shut down, rather than "lost" meaning it dropped off.

yes, one dropping off would add a bunch of other problems!
