Isn't that because the first Star Wars was something like book 6 in a thirteen book story .... so it was never really recoverable after that.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'recoverable'. The story of the most recent 3 is all over the place, and changed several times - if anything, the lack of throughline is why they're a bit of a mess.
The second trilogy (the earliest in the timeline) are drenched in tat-selling placement and (to my mind) intrusively cluttered with crap CGI. To add to that, the main character can't act, and the story is not very good.
