First game....

Don’t know what game it was, or whether it was my first game but, Andy Hinchcliffe definitely scored directly from a corner so it must have been late eighties. It’s my first memory of watching City and I was sat in the North Stand.

If anyone can find out what game it actually was, I’d really appreciate it.

Cheers

My dad and his best mate " Big Jim " used to go all over the country watching City from the early 50's onwards and I was told that when my Mum told my dad she was pregnant his first words were " I don't care if it's a boy or a girl but it will be a blue "

True to his word when I was 4 years old the two of them took me to Maine Rd for my birthday and I saw a 1-0 win over Swansea in the second division.
I was hooked and from that day my Dad took me to every home game until I was 13 when I started going with my mates and bought my first season ticket.
Started to go to a few away games in 1974 and then when I left school in 1976 started to do all the way games and this season is the first season that I have not been to an away game.

Still love the club but it's not the City I fell in love with all those years ago.

Think that might have been the game against Shrewsbury we drew 2-2 after being 2 down Hinchcliffe scored both, the other being a penalty. Think it is on YouTube somewhere

Huddersfield at home on a Friday night. Sat right on the back row in the top tier of the Kippax. It was pissing it down and we lost

Forty years ago today, on 1st November 1980, was my first visit to Maine Road. My parents were newly separated and Dad was looking for something to do on a Saturday afternoon. I liked football but had been more into cricket so didn't have a team of my own as such, even at 15. City were bottom of the old First Division but the team played with great spirit. What grabbed me most was the fans, chanting "We love you City we do" to a team that was rock bottom in the league. Paul Power, Dave Bennett, Nicky Reid, Joe Corrigan and one Gerry Gow, making his debut, stood out to me. Particularly Gerry Gow. Dave Bennett missed a good chance but Paul Power scored the winner and everyone went home happy. The fans, the players, the ground, the aroma of soup, pies, beer and tobacco were a heady mix that I will never forget. I was bitten by the bug that day. I wanted more. I wanted to be one of those fans. Despite the mostly thin and thinner of the first 28 years, 5 relegations, 5 promotions and the latent success of the last 10 years, I've never regretted a moment. The lows, as painful as they were, have made the highs that bit better. Thanks Dad even if you're no longer with us. Here's to a few years more...

What was your first game? What grabbed you!? Maybe you were already a Blue.

Thanks Ric, Gary, Colin and co for this site. Love it.

My Dad was also a Saturday dad, first game I remember him taking me too was Burnley at home in 1973, sat on the benches in the Platt Lane looking on in envy at the Kippax, the sun was shining and the fashion was scarves around the wrists, necks, down the side of the flared jeans and around the head, loved it, and from that day I was well and truly hooked.

The Manchester of my childhood was very much one of murky blacks and whites and greys. Arriving at the top of the Kippax for the first time for a night game vs Liverpool in the rain under floodlights was literally breathtaking. Whilst it wasn't my first City game - it was the one where they got me for life.
