1. The test of whether the smaller clubs are protected will be the regulation of debt, which is what gets them into trouble.
2. The German 51 is a bit of a myth:
a) Some clubs are exempt from the rule.
b) The biggest clubs find a way round it. Bayern, for example, is 51% owned by a large sports conglomerate ‘club’ which in theory belongs to its members.
But its three main sponsors own 25% of the club between them and sit on its board. In practice Bayern is controlled by commercial interests, not by its 51% fan base.

Given that City are suing the pants off the PL for activating illegal and unfair regulations, I think that football body is in desperate need of guidance.
The guidance should be: ‘Change your ridiculous rules or we’ll do it for you. Administer your rules fairly and equally for all clubs.’

You are confusing one poster’s view of what the regulator is going to do with the actual powers they have.
Their first objective of ensuring financial sustainability is the gateway to huge powers they have to bring this about. Similarly, every club will have to apply for a licence from the regulator; huge power there.
I accept that this sort of idea is regularly fucked up by bad government but let’s not be too pessimistic….they may even do some good. I’m going to give it a chance.

Surely it’s easier to be edgy any cynical and write the whole thing off before it’s even been set up? Despite the fact that the Tories initiated this bill with cross party support, tried to get it through parliament before they were booted out, and Labour picked up again immediately when they were in power. The only real criticism has been from Kemi Khazi who knows nothing about the game and tried some woeful political point scoring which never landed.

Yes, appreciate Wolfsburg, Leverkusen etc was more commenting on the concept.

Although it is maybe a myth to some extent (not looked into Bayern, didnt know that) no one could say German fans dont have more power in clubs than PL fans overall.

The ANC were considered a terrorist organisation in 1981 by SA, USA & UK, only in the 90s did attitudes change.

I’m sure you’d have made a fantastic MOS but would you have supported sporting sanctions?

If we give up & never try then there’s no chance but I think the poster is right to pessimistic. So often something starts with the right intentions suddenly gets taken in a different direction.

I supported UK sanctions vs S.A. In SA itself there was a lot of support for sanctions from the black pop because they could see the effect it was having. Black players were, of course, excluded from cricket and rugby, the main africaaner sports. Black men did, however, organise their own football games.
Bafana bafana emerged from there.

As much as we say keep politics out of sport I think this showed the positive effects of sanctions.

No doubt masters and the yank owners are trying to rewrite and change the rules and regulations as we speak.

That's really the point I was making mate, this is a gateway for further shenanigans. I mean why would someone want the job of being regulator so much if it wasn't to make money for themselves and more importantly their "Friends".
 
It's probably worth pointing out that Kogan's donations to Starmer and Nandy were in 2020, way before either became PM or Culture Secretary or even the opposition versions of those posts.

1) It’s going to set into law the fit and proper person owners test so that clubs are less likely to go bust like Bury or end up with terrible owners like at Reading, Southend, Sheffield Wednesday, Morecambe etc. The regulator will have the power to step in to deal with clubs in crisis.

2) It’s going to sort the impasse between the PL & EFL over the distribution of TV revenue. They’ve been haggling for years over it and the PL are purposefully dragging their feet so that they don’t have share money down the pyramid.

3) They are going to protect the heritage of clubs so that owners can’t come in and for example - change the name of a club (Hull Tigers) or the colour of the kit (Cardiff) or move the club to a different town or city (Wimbledon) without fans being properly engaged and consulted.

That’s it.

Nothing to do with ticket prices. Beer in stands. Terrestrial TV coverage. Or anything else.

I’m not really sure why fans wouldn’t want any of the above.
