What is it you think a gay footballer being open about the gender of the people he fancies will do?

Because he's the hero that football deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him...because he can take it...because he's not a hero...he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a mincing ref.

My thoughts precisely. Quite a lot of dickheaded comments in this very thread show why sexuality is still an issue in football.
