Football Pundits

Bang on. I can honestly say that I watch all televised games with the sound off. I really don't see any need for commentators.

Commentary somehow came over from radio. Obviously nobody should need commentary as we can see what is happening.

The idea television commentary is to tell us why players/managers have done certain things. Instead we get cliches like "he hit that sweetly/he really caught that/what a shot etc". Which we have all watched. They're supposed to be telling us why he took the shot (decision making) how he took the shot (technique), why players ran in certain areas (tactics) etc..

Football punditry is basically treated as a joke by players, barely any do any research. For the world cup 2010 on BBC they were laughing about not knowing anything about Algeria or Slovenia in their game. Jamie Redknapp claiming Alonso bossed the midfield when Liverpool beat the rags 4-1 at the swap. A game he didn't play in. Robbie Savage claiming Kevin Nolan played a big part in West Ham winning 3 games in a row when he was injured. When Gary Linekar tells him that he just claims he doesn't know and laughs it off.

The BBC could save millions a year by having MOTD without these pundits/experts.

Totally agree. All football commentary is utterly pointless and irritating as far as I'm concerned. We can all see what is happening on the pitch without needing to have it explained.

I actually don't hear the commentary when watching. I mean I know it's there but I just treat it as a back ground noise without really listening to what is being said. I'm more tuned in to the crowd noise as they react to the on field incidents.

All those years of having to listen to Andy Townsend commentate on Champions League games and as soon as ITV lose the rights to broadcast them they finally decide get rid of him. Fuck you ITV.

I think some are being a bit one eyed regarding the commentary. Without it we wouldn't have some iconic stuff like "the crowd are on the pitch, they think it's all over...." and "Aguerroooooo" to name a couple. Everyone to their own I suppose.

I don't think it's all pointless if done right it can add to the game entertainment value. Like Tyler yelling Aguerrrrrooooo is an iconic moment.

The biggest problem with it, is there's not many commentators(the ex player usually) who are not very good at it and they just tell us what we have seen

Then there's the Motd commentators that give their opinions every 5 seconds instead of doing the play by play.

As a boxing fan I love the HBO and Showtime commentary. People like Jim Lampley and Mario Renello take their jobs very seriously on play by play. It adds to the fights and Roy Jones actually incredible knowledge about boxing.

Paul Merson on City vs West Ham

"I can only see a narrow win. West Ham have plenty in their side. You take away their two results against Leicester and Bournemouth and they'd be right up there. I wouldn't be at all shocked if it ended in a draw."

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1

You take away their two losses and they'd be right up there!!!

Well in that case, take away our 5 wins and we'd be in the relegation zone.

What the actual fuck is he on about?
