Footballs' Hardmen

Gerry Gow gave us Backbone.Steel. he was just like Peter Reid.not afraid to put a foot in.He was the heartbeat of that old Bristol City team which got Ashton Gate rocking, back in the day..i would have been wounded,as a Bristol City fan ,if City had snapped him up...
Gow could have stayed at Bristol,he was already a legend....but i,m so glad he signed for City. Everything just changed when Gerry Gow started prowling around Maine road, centre midfield.Solid as a rock, nomore flakey City. It was an incredible transformation....from weak to Strong.
Remember driving through Peterboro` after the 81 Quarter Final and seeing Gow walking down the street to the train station with a few mates.
It was kicking off everywhere and Gow did not give a fcuk.

I read somewhere that a City player threatened Tommy Smith in a game after he went through the back of one of our lads. Was Crossan I think, will have to check it.

My Dad says Roy Paul was the hardest he has ever seen and hes watched City since 1934. Anyone who can grip a German Para by the neck gets my vote.

Billy Whitehurst and Andy Morrison could take on all the previously mentioned hard men of the modern era at once I suspect.

Very surprised that Buzzer so far hasn`t got a mention.Never flinched out of a tackle and ask any of the older left backs who they hated playing against and Buzzers name was regularly on that list.Always up for good scrap against Eddie ?? the Scottish Chelsea full back who was also a hard lad.
McCreedie is the name you're groping for ;-)

Steve Heighway was pretty decent at falling over in the box whilst playing alongside Smith
Didn't get that watched Heighway. Thought that era of Liverpool players were fairly sound, even Emlyn Hughes. I think Leeds were the worst at professional antics should we say. Francis Lee reputation for diving i chose to ignore but deep down i knew there was something in it

Billy Bell, Alf Wright and Norman Lowery the Green Dragon and New Cross FC, Ancoats finest !!

Can't ever remember too many having a pop at big Duncan Disorderly.
Leathered a couple of dippers for robbing his house if i remember rightly.
So for that reason alone Big Dunc has to be up there.

Also remember a cracking hook by little Paul Walsh to spark John Bonds son out once in a game.
The bigger they are the harder they fall, hey Paul?
Great nickname for Ferguson.Has there been a great nickname thread ?
