Forget the doom and gloom.

It is possible to remember our past and enjoy our current situation, whilst still having expectations based on what you believe the current squad is capable of achieving.

Blues that try and justify their negativity by saying it's based on 'expectation' is complete cr@p. No team has a right to anything and to dismiss the abilities of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal et al. Is crass in the extreme. I would say we are where we should be and that is fighting for the title, yes, things have gone against us in the last 2 games (unluckily in many respects) but blues that can't appreciate and be 'happy' with the circumstances of the club as it stands are just born to be miserable, in fact, it's these fans that are struggling with our new found success, it's my betting that they supported the blues precisely because they wanted to support a team that provided them with an outlet to ''moan' nothing to do with these new found 'expectations'. I don't believe that any fan can turn into a rag that quickly.

Doesn't mean I won't be disappointed if we don't win the league but there is no way I will become a keyboard warrior slagging the team as I know how lucky we are to be watching this team week in week out and our disappointment now extends to losing narrowly and unluckily at anfield!! FFS wake up and realise how lucky we are!!

This...

When people talk about "expectation" they are correct, but it does very much depend what your expectations are, of course.

Me? I expect us, each season, to be challenging for the title, finishing top four - thereby playing in the Champions League and winning a cup every other year, perhaps.

Anyone expecting more than that is going to find their enjoyment being diminished more often than it need be. united under Ferguson were a freakish manifestation. No team will dominate like that again, especially with FFP's looming presence. Anyone expecting perpetual success for City along the same lines as united is not going to enjoy the next few years very much imo.

I'm grateful for what we do have. It's certainly enough for me.

At last a voice of reason

Along the way we are going to have some bad games all teams do, and most reasonable people expect that
For the ridiculous amount of money invested in this team, winning a cup every other year is a realistic expectation? I'd say that would me a major underachievement - and with the '5 trophies in 5 years' quote, the boss thinks the same.

It's good for a set of fans to have expectations, and we all want our team to be the best, but sometimes shit happens, and I for one get pissed off and my heart sinks when things don't go as we would want them to, but there are some serious moaning cunts on this forum, I told someone to get a grip the other day because he said all our stars would want transfers, I swear I could hear him crying as he typed a shitty response back to me,
Expectations are a good thing, being a moaning **** when we don't win is not...

I'm with you mate. Some of these guys are living in a time warp. Being a non-competitive side for so long has meant many have forgot what football is all about. It's about winning.

Yes - I went when we were shite and got beat by Stockport County - I fail to see what this has to do with underachieving this season.
Sorry to put a downer on the thread - you can ignore my ramblings and go back to Shindler-scented nostalgia and 'look how far little City have come' blessing-counting now if you like.

Not so sure as a team we have underachieved, think in some games certain players have under preformed and that has cost us, as fans it's good to have high expectations, but not a good thing to be arrogant that we should win everything...

How can I put this? I seriously doubt that there is any Blue who thinks that we have a 'divine right' to win silverware. It's simply that when you look at those players out on the pitch, all of them internationals for their respective country; when you look at Yaya, when you talk about him with fans of other clubs, in England and in Europe, and they completely rave about him, to a man; when you see Merlin being applauded off the pitch at the Bernabeu last season by the entire stadium; when you look at Vinny and Sergio (however they've played recently), and you know that they would be automatic first choices in the starting line-up at any club in this country, then yes, you have to say to yourself, is the League Cup enough, not for me, the fan, but for this team, given its quality which has been universally recognized by our rivals (think of Sherwood's comment, exaggerated admittedly, but when did you last hear that said about any other team in this country?) ?
It honestly didn't occur to me, until these last two matches, that we would finish anywhere lower than second. Just on the basis of how we've played for most of the season. We had a wobbly period at the start — o.k., new manager, new style, new players bedding in, what have you — and a far less understandable wobbly period now. We have not looked like the killer team that championship teams have to be. Going a goal up at Arsenal, then not killing it off when they were frightened of us. Going two goals down at Anfield, then coming back brilliantly to a point where they were frightened of us too, then throwing it away. Almost losing at home, to Sunderland, who are already down, as near as. I understand fans who say, it's not good enough, given the quality of what we have out there. That is not an arrogant sense of entitlement. We will never be like that. Now I respect the past of this club as much as anyone, but let's be honest, we're in a different ball park now and yes, we're hungry for silverware. For me, it's a half successful season, and we've had truly lousy luck with injuries. I seriously wonder if there's been an injury record like it in the history of this club. And I repeat what I've said on other threads: I have seen, both at the Etihad and on telly, some of the most skilful football ever in more than forty years of supporting them. I'll be at the West Brom game on Monday night, and for what it's worth, that involves a 3000 km round trip for me to be there. No regrets. It's great to be there. These are fantastic times to be a Blue. City is family. That's it.

Gloom: Temporary. And understandable. The dream of winning the league title which was very achievable died in the space of 4 days

But Doom? Next week work begins again on City's new stand. It wont be long before you're sat with 62,000 City fans cheering on another assault on the League title.

We won the League Cup and nearly went the distance in 4 competitions just falling at the last. Was only a few months ago that some people talked about a quadruple. It was never realistic, but a team that is talked of in those terms isn't going to disappear. Pellegrini and the players wont need 2 months to work their game out, and surely we can't have another season of injuries like we have had this season (actually in World Cup year we probably can - that's the only thing that can stop us).

Sign one defender in the Summer, and maybe some attacking cover in midfield where the squad is short and we'll be challenging for everything again.

Lucky you're blue. And thank God that the previous generation of City fans had the spine to stick by their team and really show you all what being a supporter is all about.

Well said Marvin. I much prefer it when you're in a positive mood :-)

Did we buy the best players in the world for every position in the team?? If we did I would say we are underachieving, u sound a bit like the rag tops in ur statement it's something they would come out with "they have spent loads of money so should win everything" I think the club said "at least" 5 trophies in 5 years, whereas I would love city to win 15 in 5 years, it's not gonna fuckin happen, the club is being realistic the fans should be too...
