Frank De Boer (new boss?)

It would be ironic if most of the people in this thread are singing a chant about this man in 6 months as he is directing our players.

I am certainly not fond of Mancini at this point, but De Boer would be possibly too much of a risk at this stage. Very inexperienced as a manager, and only has been in charge of Ajax (dare I say "the rags of Eredivisie").

That being said, he shit all over Mancini in Europe. Made Mancini look like a damn fool, while utilizing kids and a few players who couldn't cut it at Liverpool a couple years ago. If you doubt whether he would be a decent replacement, just watch the Ajax home and away games from last year.

Also, his two main clubs during his playing career are essentially what we're modelling our academy after, and he's not afraid to build a team to include youth and potential.

Honestly, I think he'd fit in better than Mancini at this point.

A certain inexperienced pep guardiola was handed the reins at Barcelona and he ended up being the best Manager in Barcelona's history and arguably the best in Europe.

A very good point.

Excellent discussion. Certainly be paying him a bit more attention from now on - especially after Tolmie's post on the Mancini thread

And have a look at Rijkaard's record pre-Barcelona, these guys in charge seem to see beyond a manager's previous win rate and trophy haul.

That is interesting to read mate. Is does make you realise what a seemingly brave appointment he was at the time.

Perhaps the point was that at Barca it wasn't really all about the manager anyway; he was simply the first team coach who was part of a larger structure of which he did not have control (including transfer policy).

Pretty much the environment we're creating now and one that is more common than not at top clubs outside of England I think. Mancini just doesn't seem the type for this model, his autocratic personality is in direct conflict with the DoF model which is why it's hard to see him here for many years to come.

Yes it was a brave appointment at the time. But remember, Ronaldinho came to Barca in 2003 did he not, and he was widely regarded as the best player in the world at that time. In addition he had the emerging Lionel Messi during his management, so it's not like he had a complete bag of chisels in that squad.

No, not really. Ronaldinho was probably the best prospect in the world when he moved from Paris to Barcelona but no means the best player in the world and wouldn't be named that until a couple of years later. PSG had finished near mid-table and Ronaldinho had stood out, it'd be a bit like us signing Neymar now (except Neymar is an even bigger name). Would you expect him to single handedly lead us to global domination?

And Messi was just turning 14 when Rijkaard took over and it was only in Rijkaard's 4th season that Messi really started to make a big impact on the team. It was young players like Eto'o and Deco (and Ronaldinho of course) who made the real difference in the early days of Rijkaard's Barca. Barca were actually a complete mess around the time Laporta's group of 30-somethings (including Soriano and Txiki) put Rijkaard in charge, 4 years without a trophy and with a bunch of serial underachievers. It took Rijkaard some time and there were calls for his head early on but he turned out to be the coach who, with the help of the support staff (including our own Txiki), helped turn Barcelona around on the pitch. Pep took them to another level for Rijkaard laid the foundations and won the Champions League with them.

So I think the "he walked into a gold mine" argument can be used a little with Pep but not Rijkaard, he walked into a mess of a club.

I can't wait for summer tho, in terms of transfers and general club activity :-)

I cannot wait either. We'll have another fresh start and have plenty of time joking about the crowded bus stop's worth of a crowd for the Rag parade.
