Frenkie de Jong

I still worry he will end up at the rags, they have execs out in Barca now talking, it would be a disaster in more ways than one if they get him, he would transform that team.

He would be a big missing link, allowing them to retain possession. A disaster, as you say.

Thankfully, he hasn't seemed keen and could have joined Chelsea last month.

We are already a couple bodies short IMO, but would like to think Foden and Grealish can tweak their positions?

I certainly don't like the inverted full-back shape at present, think it puts too much onus on the likes of Walker to help beat the press, Cancelo's risk/reward attributes need to be at the top end of the pitch.

It's one of the reasons I loved Zinny, he was great on the deck and the build out.

At present, we are giving up the wide areas to teams, which is allowing some to get in crosses that should be cut off at source?
If we stay as we are, Grealish and Foden really have to step up big time.

That's what I don't get. He was all agreed before he joined Barca.

Both parties know the merits.
I think we offered what we thought was a fair £55m - £60m with £200k pw in wages, but Barça came in late & offered £65m to Ajax & £400k pw in wages to the player.

Like Sanchez, Cucurella, Pogba, Maguire, Fred & others before & since, we stuck to our valuation & personal terms & walked away when the auction started.

It could be a case of, if FDJ wanted to leave Ajax that summer, the Barça deal was the only one agreed with both the clubs involved & the player.

If a deal was agreed with City but FDJ preferred Barça when they made a late offer, would City go back in for him if it was the player who scuppered the deal?

I doubt it even moves the needle in terms of the wiggle room they need to create elsewhere to register players they have already signed!

Typical Barcelona, they value De Jong at £80m and Bernie at £65m.

I do have a hunch that Bernie might push it a bit more after last night.

Love the guy, but Frenkie would be a dream signing for us on many levels, personal opinion.

Age profile, mentality, technical aspects, ability to play 5, 6, 8 and 10.

Sadly, Gundo and Kev can't go on forever and having Phil, Grealish and De Jong, would ensure our creative spark for many seasons to come.

I would not want to see this guy at any of our Prem rivals. He is one of those rare players who, when on song, elevates those around him.
Why are we not chasing this transfer mate especially with the silva situation as it makes do much sense ?

The biggest danger would be him joining Liverpool. Immediately transform their midfield.

The problem for all parties is that only united will play the fee that Barca want that will allow them pay de Jong off. Plus they’ll pay his ridiculous wages but he doesn’t want to go there.

Chelsea should be able to do the deal but he may not fancy Tuchel’s work man like team.

He’d love to pay for Pep no doubt but we won’t match his Barca wages and won’t pay Barca’s fee.

Exactly

He would, but i can't see them paying the fee or his wages.
Now if he is willing to re-negotiate his wages for them, then we should be all over that regardless if Bernie stays or not.
