Game of Thrones 4

Seeing the great job that they've done with Game of Thrones, I would love someone to do something similar for The Riftwar Saga.

It's a huge gamble to take on something like that though, a massive financial risk. As much as I love riftwar it wouldn't be nearly so popular it's a lot more predictable and follows the tropes of the fantasy genre. The Prince of Thorns or the Black Company series might be better bets imo.

A film based on 'Magician' would be great. The second and third books are quite average. The following Serpentwar books were disapointing too I thought. Out of all the R.E.Feist books I would consider only Magician to be a classic.

Though I would love a TV series based on Gemmell's Drenai saga or the Waylander books

The second book was just a bridge between two and three. I'm surprised you didn't like the third. The siege of Armengar and the battle of Sethanon were epic and brought a nice end to the series(or at least you think so at the time)

I liked The Serpentwar books too, non of them are in the same class as Magician but they are hugely enjoyable.

Now Gemmell has died, you might see a Drenai film. Whilst he was alive he flatly refused any and every offer he got. Someone wanted to make a film out of Legend and he was originally interested, but they wanted the rights to the whole series, including any future works. So he told them to do one.

Did you ever go to any of his book signings ? He did a couple round here. One in Waterstones in town and one in Stockport. He was a great raconteur, I could listen to him for hours.

-- Tue Apr 08, 2014 9:15 pm --

I've read Prince of Thorns but it was a long time ago and I can't for the life of me remember what it was about.

It's very dark. The son of a King sees his mum and brother murdered it fucks him up big time and he eventually runs off with a band of generally pretty evil mercenaries. He does some horrific things with the end goal of revenge.

This is the blurb.

Before the thorns taught me their sharp lessons and bled weakness from me I had but one brother, and I loved him well. But those days are gone and what is left of them lies in my mother's tomb. Now I have many brothers, quick with knife and sword, and as evil as you please. We ride this broken empire and loot its corpse. They say these are violent times, the end of days when the dead roam and monsters haunt the night. All that's true enough, but there's something worse out there, in the dark. Much worse.

From being a privileged royal child, raised by a loving mother, Jorg Ancrath has become the Prince of Thorns, a charming, immoral boy leading a grim band of outlaws in a series of raids and atrocities. The world is in chaos: violence is rife, nightmares everywhere. Jorg has the ability to master the living and the dead, but there is still one thing that puts a chill in him. Returning to his father's castle Jorg must confront horrors from his childhood and carve himself a future with all hands turned against him.

Mark Lawrence's debut novel tells a tale of blood and treachery, magic and brotherhood and paints a compelling and brutal, and sometimes beautiful, picture of an exceptional boy on his journey toward manhood and the throne.

Come to think of it Stony I do remember A Darkness at Sethanon being quite good.
Been a huge fan of Gemmell since was in college but I never thought about ever going to a book signing until after he died. I wish I had gone.
I have since been to signings of other authors and even sent a book to GRRM to sign. He still signs books if you send them to him even though he gets a huge amount of requests since Game of Thrones TV series became so popular worldwide (his books were already best sellers of course)

Does the tv show follow the books accurately?

No but the main plot is the same, the books are more epic with a hell of a lot more characters.

More characters!! Fuck me! It's difficult enough following it as it is!

Yeah but you are with them so to speak a lot longer in the book, i think it is a lot easier to follow than the tv show.
