he adds fuck all thats what, the amount of times i watch him pass the ball to the other team..
Barry gave the ball away 13 times today.
That's one more than Silva and three less than Yaya, despite passing 10-15 times more than them.
He doesn't add "fuck all". Do you really think that a succession of professional football managers and national team managers would play a player that adds fuck all? Just because you can't see his game, doesn't mean it isn't there.
The absolute point of Gareth Barry is to play the same role as Carrick does at United, Xavi does at Barcelona or Pirlo has done at Milan. He is purely there to move the ball around the midfield; not to kick to long at every opportunity. He passes the ball sideways, so that our players can receive the ball in a position where they can use their peripheral vision to spot the movement of the four forwards/defenders ahead of them. This is also why he often drifts wide, it gives him a better view of the whole pitch and allows him to see the development of the play. He also retains the ball really well usually and his average pass completion is in the 80s%. He had a bad game today, as did everybody, it happens.
I don't know what you'd call this as a position. I suppose central midfielder is the best description we have, but "crab" is more accurate.
It's a position that is highly important to any tactic that has a large number of people up top, and because it requires a unique type of intelligence, not a lot of people can play it either. If you put Yaya here for example, he'd be fucked. Same with Milner. Vieira can and does sometimes play this role, and he gets criticised for it too.
