Gareth Southgate

Anyone remember the FA Cup game at home to United in January 2012? Of course you all do - it's the one where Kompany was sent off early doors and we were 3-0 down at half-time but almost staged a miraculous recovery in the 2nd half, eventually losing 3-2. I watched that second half back a day or so later and Southgate was one of the ITV pundits along with Roy Keane. Southgate was purring over Mancini's tactics in the 2nd half, whereas all Keane could say was "But they still lost the game". Southgate went on to say that we can learn from managers like Mancini and it always stuck with me that instead of doing a Keane and merely stating that it counted for fuck-all because we lost the game anyway, he could see it (the performance) had a lot more going for it than merely losing the match.

Fast forward 6 and a half years and I don't think it's any coincidence that, save for getting Sunderland promoted one year about a decade or so ago, Keane has been a managerial flop whereas Southgate is earning plaudits all over the place. That's because I suspect that, great player that he was, Keane rarely bothered with tactics when he was a manager but Southgate, along with Steve Holland who also deserves a lot of credit, clearly does.

One thing's for certain, victory on Wednesday and Southgate's name will go down in history - for the right reasons. Fat Sam, on the other hand, he'll be remembered as a tactical dinosaur with questionable morals.

Never been a great fan of Southgate to be honest but regardless of what happens from here, he’s certainly turned me into a fan, if England win the cup I may just forgive him for making money from Pizza Hut by missing a penalty for England at Euro 96...!

Poor substitution timings and game management let's Southgate down again...

Got further than anyone thought we would with this group of players.

I'm not sure he's the reason we didn't have a shot on target in open play for 120 minutes.

Kane and Lingard score them chances and Southgates an hero again.

Deserves great credit for getting us as far he did. But got it wrong with the subs tonight. The Sterling/Rashford change simply made no sense. Delph for Alli after ca. 60 mins was a no brainer as well.

Beat who he should of...
Absolutely

P6
W3
D2 (winning one on pens and losing the other in extra time)

I have been underwhelmed by England. We scored next to no goals from open play which implies our players aren't very good or wrong tactics

Out of 10 I score England a 7. Which they receive by virtue of a fortunate run to the semi final

Semi-final is about as good as he could've done with the squad he had.
