Gary James interviewing Noel Gallagher about City

I'm guilty of giving Noel and Liam a bit of a hard time (not that they'd care) when they're discussed on here or in general conversation with pals. More to do with my thoughts on oasis and their respective careers since oasis split up I have to add.

I've somehow allowed myself to think of them both as your typical Soccer AM guest who knows very little about the club that they support and is more of a face than a supporter.

However many good points have been raised on this thread about Noel and Liams support for City and when you think about it, they've done a shit load of things that'd raise, or give us any profile at all at times so why I allowed myself to think of them both of faces rather than the proper supporters they are I don't know.

Got a trip up to Shap in my truck tomorrow morning so I'm looking forward to listening to the interviews.

Was just going to post that picture ! It still up in my lads rooms.

As a manc living in kent I still finding it funny when Noel or Liam say stuff that these southerners dont get. They get classed as rude and big headed etc, to me they are just taking the piss and not taking themselves to seriously lol.

I have no problems with Noel or Liam being City fans and I love the fact both have City flags on the stage sets.

Yes I might be looking thought rise tinted glasses, but City and Oasis brought Manchester closer to me ;)

Think Noel just lives the dream still and unlike most of us probably didn’t spend the last week worrying about final tickets but that’s the luxury of fame. definitely Done his dues...not sure about Liam think he is the part timer of the two .... and marr although clearly a fan never spoke about city much pre 2000s. Personally all that ‘I the biggest fan’ bollocks’ just reminds me of camelgob, hucknall nesbitt and all the other rags... if you spend your own money to go to games you have an opinion whether you’re king or pauper i suppose

old article here of interest well before there was much in it for him!

When I worked on the ships we brought the band back from Calais one Wednesday morning in the early nineties. I wish I could remember the exact year, I remember we were playing West Brom I think in the league cup. They were famous and known but I don't think they'd blown up to be the biggest rock band in the world then.

The ship was quite quiet and they were all camped out in the bar on the piss. No airs and graces, roadies, band, security all together. The boss asked if they wanted to go to a private lounge but they told him they were happy in the bar. I spoke to them both they were sound. I remember Noel taking the piss out of Liam for buying regal from the bar saying he didn't smoke them. They posed for pics without any drama. One of our girls knew their head of security and he gave her three free tickets and backstage passes for their Newcastle gig.

I think they're just two down to earth Manchester lads who made good. At a time when we were shit on the field their fame and supporting us publicly gave us a kudos and profile our football couldn't so it worked well. Good luck to them.

I remember listening to Noel Gallagher on Talk Sport a few years ago when I was working the night shift. I thought his knowledge, not just about City, but football in general, was sound as a pound.

He was on air for a couple of hours and it was an interesting listen at the time. He was just being straight about the game we all love and he made many valid points. He was chatting away without any airs or graces and his love of the game and City was very evident.

A lot of neutrals I know have a soft spot for City because of the Noel / Liam connection
Oasis were a huge part of the spirit and buzz around City in the 1990s. City had an okay team under Kendall and a bit later under Horton but got progressively worse through the decade. However, City were seen as the coolest club to follow in the country despite us being remarkably unremarkable.

A part of why we got 28,000 in the third tier was because of that spirit and buzz around the club at the time that Oasis were a big part of. Oasis would do gigs in Argentina and Japan and people in the crowd would have City shirts and flags, just because of Oasis. It’s a reason why I’ll always maintain that it’s always been fucking mint being a City fan, the late 90s weren’t shit like some like to say they were. Ball and Clark’s tenures were shit, but across the wider time period being a City fan was mint.

We were the coolest club to follow in the country. You can’t say the same about Leeds Forest Sunderland and the Sheffield clubs when they were in falling from the Prem, into the second tier and into the third tier.

Noel has had a very good impact on our credibility and standing, he is a intelligent man and speaks well.

Liam shoots from the hip, but the older he gets the more likable he becomes, he may be an utter c8nt at times but he is our blue c8nt.

Exactly this, were were seen as cool in the 90;s thanks to them, we were still relevant, when we really had no right to be.

United had Ginger Mick as their cheer leader, says it all, working class hero with a Monaco post code.

In the dark days of the 90s Oasis helped make MCFC appeal to people around the globe. City sold merchandise by using Oasis’s name so if we added it all up it may well be that MCFC still owe Noel for the increased income the club had back then.

for me the difference between Noel Gallagher and certain celebrity fans of other clubs is clear. He was a fan, like any of us, but he became a celebrity. He wasn’t a celebrity who became a fan of a trendy club like some people do.

Over the years I’ve interviewed quite a few celebrity MCFC fans and I can usually tell straight away how much of a fan they were BEFORE they became famous and were wined/dined by the club. Noel is a definite fan. Like us all he may get the odd date wrong - his first game was in 75 for example not 74 - but you can tell he was there because of what he says; how he describes it etc. His stories of specific games tend to match the facts and the experiences ordinary fans had.
Indeed.

I got this away kit for my Birthday for the sole reason that Liam was wearing it

I also remember having a “City” t-shirt and City keyring in the style of the Oasis logo, sold by the club.

Liam's the funnier of the two, in my opinion. Bit of a loose cannon.

I think that what struck me most listening to the first two posts was that if you got any City fan of my sort of age (I’d have been the year below them at school) and talked about City over a pint you’d have the same sort of conversation because we all have the same memories - all those quarter final defeats, your memories of the day of the takeover, the shite strips we got and the odd belter in there as well, your first game some time in the 70s, your favourite player from when you were a kid.

Like Gary says, I’m not sure you’d get that if you were talking to Eamonn Holmes or Mick Hucknall.

The Saturday night concert at Maine Road was incredible, earlier that day went to Villa Park and we won, came back for the concert and they blew the roof off the place.

Ha, Liam's not a c8nt mate, he's a comedy genius, then again maybe it's because I grew up with lads (before Liam was born) with that same sense of humour that I get it.

Met him a few times, he's a c8nt but incredibly likable and very, very funny.
Like I say above mate, I can see how a lot of things Liam says and does can be taken the wrong way, don't get me wrong, I guess I'm pretty desensitized, but he's a WUM (just ask Noel), he knows exactly what he's doing.

I love the guy, you don't have to defend him for me.

I knew Mani from the Roses very well, Liam is his best mate, those two together was comedy gold, both great lads.

Mani must be having sleepless nights with Saturday on the horizon.

I lived in Hong Kong in the mid-nineties. Often, when I saw a City shirt I would have a quick chat. Nine times out of ten the wearer would know fuck all about City but love Oasis. The rags I knew hated it - so that’ll do for me.
Plus, because I was well into the music it got me my first DJ gigs over there.
The Noel or Liam ‘who would you like a pint with?’ debate divides people. I prefer Noel but my lad’s Liam - so they’ll have to reunite if they want to come for a pint with us in Porto ;-)

Part 3 is now live:

In part three we discuss Garry Cook (that’s the Garry we refer to at the start of this), both of us (separately) meeting Khaldoon, earning the Champions League, earning success/buying success, opening up the Premier League, Oasis influencing support in the 90s, a Zurich based Oasis influenced band called Mania and inflatable bananas. This will run for five days with a section added each day.
