There are some relatively simple answers but ideology gets in the way!!Except that they can only set the price the energy suppliers sell it to us. They can't set the price that the suppliers buy it from the wholesale markets in order to sell it to us (that is a global market price). All they would do is make all the suppliers go bust (a load have already). Who sells us the energy then - the government? And where do they get it from? The same high priced global markets as before.
Its a sh*t situation but there aren't any easy answers to it.
They could break the link between renewable prices and gas prices. They could buy North Sea gas at a discount and not tie it to the global price. They could do what the French did and nationalise our EDF equivalent and thus put ‘profit’ into investment and discounted prices. The French energy bills are going to be 4% more this year than they were last.
