Gas & Electricity

Except that they can only set the price the energy suppliers sell it to us. They can't set the price that the suppliers buy it from the wholesale markets in order to sell it to us (that is a global market price). All they would do is make all the suppliers go bust (a load have already). Who sells us the energy then - the government? And where do they get it from? The same high priced global markets as before.

Its a sh*t situation but there aren't any easy answers to it.
There are some relatively simple answers but ideology gets in the way!!

They could break the link between renewable prices and gas prices. They could buy North Sea gas at a discount and not tie it to the global price. They could do what the French did and nationalise our EDF equivalent and thus put ‘profit’ into investment and discounted prices. The French energy bills are going to be 4% more this year than they were last.

Explain how that would be done. What exactly would be nationalised and how would it be paid for?
PS EDIT. RWE and EON are multinationals mainly German and French owned with a market cap of over £25bn each.

And it's going to cost the French government (i.e. the French taxpayers in the end) £7billion to do this. And that's only for one year - what about next year, and the year after? Do they continue writing blank cheques?

What will happen if millions don't pay?
This could be the 2022 poll tax

Who do you think is going to pay for this, in the end? Who’s paid for the collapse of the energy companies, who paid for the lockdown largesse which, if you didn’t know better, you’d swear Richie had paid for himself? The taxpayer (PAYE anyway) always pays, in the end. If we took control of the water and energy we would still end up paying but we might not have people freezing to death and we might have upgraded sewer systems which wouldn’t involve potentially swallowing turds when going swimming.
