Gas & Electricity

Can people please stop posting things like "My bill was £72 last month". Start quoting in terms of £KWH and how many KWH you're expecting to use. Otherwise it's just nonsense numbers that mean very little to anyone.
Fair comment.
However, I have no idea what I pay per KWH or what my daily standing charges are.
I am not going to prompt a conversation with my provider until I feel I have no other choice.
This may be naive, but it's a risk I am going to take at the moment.
I have refused to set up a DD or have a smart meter for probably close to 5 years now.
My provider texts me once a month for meter readings, once I have sent them they e-Mail the cost (I need to check with her indoors what detail is in the e-Mail as it may have the rates), and I post them a cheque (Yes I did say I post them a cheque).
My missus is somewhat old fashioned in her ways and still likes to "put money up". For years she has put £20 a week aside. For years this has been adequate for the summer months, with us having to put around an additional £30/40 a month during the winter.
I guess I must be in the minority with my arrangements.

My latest fixed price quote with octopus has the following rates:

Electricity: 71p per kWh/42p per day standing charge.
Gas: 20p per kWh/27p per day standing charge.

Our current rates are:

Electricity: 28p per kWh/42p per day standing charge.
Gas: 7p per kWh/27p per day standing charge.

Our monthly DD is £260 currently and this will go to £573 per month. We were paying £110 per month last year. This is not economically sustainable.

I added more loft insulation a couple of years ago and we have replaced the gas boiler. I run the heating flow temperature at 65 degrees to maximise the efficiency of the condensing boiler. We don’t have the heating on for really long periods, the thermostat is set at 20 degrees and it’s on for about 5 hours a day.

We don’t think it’s unreasonable to have a warm house in this day and age, but £6,886 for 12 months of gas and electricity is just ridiculous.
Christ, even your current rates look scary to me, your future ones are the stuff of nightmares.

We fixed for 3 years at the end of last September with EDF at:

Electricity unit rate: 20.05p per kWh/Daily standing charge: 24.87p per day
Gas unit rate: 3.951p per kWh/Daily standing charge: 26.12p per day

Lord knows where it'll be in 2 years if that's the difference after just 11 months.

You may have to adapt how you monitor your use age this winter. Having the heat on for 5 hours a day will probably cost about £20 a day.

Fucking hell

Just had my bill

Elec = 26.686p per KWH
Gas = 6.993p per KWH
plus standing charges 40.23p per day elec and 25.923p per day gas
and plus 5% VAT

If these go any higher I'm fucked

Best decision you ever made. Will save you a fortune.

A friend of mine who runs a pub sent me this...

Electric:
Daily charge=39p
Peak=82.6 (was about 17p)
Off-peak (weekends + 11pm-7am)=72.51

Gas:
Daily charge=15p (was about 4p)
Unit cost=20.71

So nearly 5x increase for electric, nearly 4x for gas.
Roughly then, that's the cost for power up from £7k to £30-35k

That's the price cap figures.
Will be 52p for electricity and 15p for gas (including VAT) in October if the government don't do something.
