Gas & Electricity

Anyone heard of Vimma? A battery you buy and charge up using cheap night rates for electricity without the need for solar panels.

If so, any good?

On paper it sounds like a great idea, but how long before you actually make the savings could be years surely.

My last electric bill Octopus charged me 14.5ppkWh, slightly down on the previous months 15p. Cheaper than electric was 4 years ago.
The advantage of having an EV tariff is that 65% of all our electric is charged at 7p the remainder at 29p.
Or presented in another way our electric bill is £50 a month cheaper with an EV than it is without.

had to dig this thread out as didn't want to start a new one but possibly looking at solar panels and wondering if anyone has recently had them fitted, see loads of adverts.in social media but not sure I trust them so obviously recommendations is always a good thing, also are they worth it as in when do you get in profit with them?

Had them fitted in Nov 22. 9 panels, but split 6 on & 3 due to design of roof. Means we get sun all day in summer, but we're never getting full capacity from the 9.

We've had over 10,000kWh from them, so at 25p/kWh to buy electric, around £2.5k in 3 years. As ever, not that simple and all depends on your set up.

We've also got battery back up, which we've increased since the original install, and I'd definitely recommend getting batteries. With them, pretty much all of the electricity we use is bought overnight at 7p. The solar recharges the batteries during the day but once full, feeds into the grid, which we now get 15p/kWh for. Take the ability to move virtually all consumption to overnight and the feed in tariff and I'd say they've been worth a lot more than the £2.5k above, although I've given up trying to calculate the savings.

Find a decent installer and they will give you a reasonable estimate, although takes a bit of time to compare, as different systems, batteries etc. I've seen there are premium panels available which increase production, although not sure of the cost difference. We used askrenewablesolutions based in Wigan and were really happy with them from their initial contact and quote through to undertaking the work, including having to replace a panel that was damaged when they took it off the pallet.

My suggestions based on our experience:
- Work out your rough daily electricity consumption and aim for at least that in battery capacity, as on cloudy winter days you'll generate virtually nothing, so need the batteries to cover everything.
- Get a larger inverter (5kW, I think) as ours is only 3.5kw, so if you have the oven and kettle on, you can go over the inverter meaning you have to take power from the grid regardless of solar production or size of batteries.

Bastard, Just bloody fixed in last week.
yeah me too but I read somewhere that if you fixed to beat the price cap the companies will honour these falls?

The action the government has taken will particularly benefit households who use more electricity, many of whom are on lower incomes. It will also support those on fixed tariffs, with suppliers confirming they will be passing on the savings to customers who have chosen to fix their rates off the price cap.

I am very wary of fixes - the people offering them know the way their industry is going - for example you see ads for SAGA motor insurance where over 50's can insure with them and fix the premium for 2 years - thing is my premium has come down every year for the past 3 years

But even though the Price Cap will fall, MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis says "it's still pants" and you should "ditch it if you can". That's because the top fixed deals undercut the current (January to March) Cap by around 14%, and if you fix now, unprecedentedly your fixed rates will drop in April too.

They really need to scrap the standing charge, they upped these when loads of companies went bump, that was years ago, it’s getting close to £1 a day now just for the privilege of been connected, get rid of it and put it on the price if fuel, the more you use the more you pay. I think we have some of the highest costs in the world, it’s fucking scandalous, Millaband needs to fuck off with his net zero bollocks, we can’t afford it but this twat of a millionaire has no idea of real life, when the rest of the world either doesn’t give a fuck or is doing it over a longer period but this guy seems to want to carve his name in history, just fuck off you prick.
