That would be one assumption as there are no practical or economic arguments to assert immigration is too high. Immigration is driven by demand and needs of the economy therefore ‘too high’ is a meaningless argument. Too high by what measure? People are coming here to do jobs that we need filling for the economy to function. The end.

Its not that straight forward im affraid. Undoubtedly there are many positives to immigration, but there are also some negatives which we do need address as a country.

Maybe AI will save us!
I think historians will look back on this election and marvel at just how little AI featured in the discussion. It has the imminent potential to dramatically reduce the amount of immigration required, yet it also has the potential to dramatically reduce human employment levels in all sectors and at all levels. However, rather like Brexit, AI barely warrants any mention in either of the two main manifestoes.

There are two enormous elephants in the U.K. living room, yet more time is spent at the window twitching the net curtains and looking for the pink elephant of 'race'.

Address what? That’s meaningless. The level of immigration is tied to the demands and needs of the economy. Govts try and regulate it and end up carving out exemptions when the shit hits the fan and/or when they realise other countries are making it easier and cheaper to come to them. The UK is competing with other European economies - including growing Eastern Europe economies - for immigrant labour and, as a bonus, we handicapped ourselves with Brexit.

People can blather on all they like about immigration being too high, but you only have to look at this ‘tough on immigration’ Govt which shipped in people in record numbers to keep the economy afloat and keep tax rises to a minimum. Reality is a bitch and all that.

Mid-Essex where we live is probably a bit worse than most places, in fairness. Ironically my wife is a doctor of psychology who works a few days a week in Clacton (as well as other parts of the Essex trust)… Her English is better than mine but probably won’t surprise you to hear she has had patients who refuse to be treated by her. Now she works with adolescents who are an easier demographic in that respect.

Things were definitely better living in Manchester and London, but we moved out here to be able to afford to buy a house. We’ll definitely move at some point but it’s hard to know where and when given we both have family to consider.
mid Essex is where all the racist from London moved out to once their houses rocketed in value

If numbers were to be genuinely cut then we would need to completely reorganise society with materially lower standards of health and social care, and hospitality. It would be possible, I guess, but the end result would be awful.

Well, we will have to agree to dissagree, as like I said you see no negatives at all only positives. I have explained some of the negatives and could go on, but it would be clearly pointless. Have a good day Bob. Chic and Nile Rogers for us later. :-)

If our poll is even slightly representative of the national picture, the collapse of the Tories is even worse than even the most dire predictions.
Shame ;-)

For comparison this was our poll last time which shows Labour about 12% above what happened and the Tories a similar percentage below. If we applied a similar correction to our poll the Tories are still completely fucked.

Well clearly it isn't, this forum is dominated by left wing posters.

Some might say it's a tyranny of the majority ;-)
Some of the more right leaning posters on this forum have said they’re voting Labour. As I say the Tories are fucked and it seems by even more than the most pessimistic predictions. When the best the Tory press can come up with is scare stories about the possible demise of public school choirs that’s further evidence there’s no way back for them.

Certainly no way back in this GE. Probably the next, but remember all governments fail eventually. That's the nature of the beast.

There are a few vociferous defenders of the Tories on here, so surprised there's only the one vote for them. But yeh, I'd say this forum is reflective of the mood of the country, or as close to reflective as you can get.

Interesting that immigration seems to rank highly for all voters regardless of party and is on average higher than Housing and Education which to me is a bit of a shock.

Given that we've had two parties making asylum and immigration their main theme (obsession?) over the last couple of years, it's maybe not that surprising.

It is pretty sad though.
