General Videogame Thread

I only look at this thread once in a while, have things moved on since Duke nuckem ? And what’s an RPG ? Thinking about getting an Xbox PS5 no idea which is better and at 53 not sure I’d get into again

Role Playing Game, focus on character progression, storytelling, levelling up and in-game tasks such as crafting and building. Huge range within RPG genre though and things like action RPG or J(Japanese)RG are considered separate genres.

If you are unsure about how much you would use it, I would hold off a bit. There are only a handful of games on the newer machines at the moment and most aren't exclusive (even if they are optimised best on the new hardware). When easing of Covid restrictions allow, If you know a mate who has one and is happy to give you a test-drive or somewhere like Game's Belong Arcades (where you can rent time to play on consoles or PCs) when they open back up.

I'd recommend reading up about the features of both too. If you want something for casual entertainment at low cost you could pick up a an Xbox with the monthly game pass subscription or you might be more tempted by PS5's 1st party exclusive titles. Most of the big titles will be on both machines though.

Once you pick up a machine you can save on the cost of the games if you shop around on 2nd market or use online key codes from places like CDkeys.com for downloads instead of buying from official PS or Xbox stores (make sure it is UK or EU version though).

I'm loving Cyberpunk so far. Think I've been really lucky as I haven't had a single crash or game breaking bug in the 10 hours I've played so far. Then again I knew I was always going to love this game as it is everything I want from a game. Cyberpunk setting, RPG, cool upgrades and implants, great writing etc. Sucks other people are having performance issues but hopefully they can sort that with future patches but this looks fantastic on my PC with ray tracing on.

1.04 patch out for Cyberpunk. PC owners getting another few FPS, PS5 owners say it's a lot sharper. PS4 say it's improved many problems but still short of expectations.

FPS for PC users is apparently hugely dependant on CPU. Some Ryzen 2600 owners who've splashed out on a 3080 might be a bit miffed right now.

believe it or not the GPU will be the bottleneck even if it's a 3080 with the 2600 Ryzen, Red dead redemption and Assassins Creed will be the opposite causing a CPU bottleneck.

All that being said the FPS will be stable by dropping a few settings and not go for ultra high settings. Even if PC gamers went out and bought a 3700x it would still be GPU bottleneck.

Weird isn't it, that you can spend £750 on a GPU and in some games that's the weakest part of your system? There should be more furore over how developers aren't optimising their games well enough, if new expensive haedware can't deliver what's the point?

Managed to eventually get in my Xbox X last night properly, Destiny 2 looks beautiful at 60FPS it’s so smooth. Gamepass is well worth the money especially if you do the work rounds to get it very cheap, I’m subbed until August 2022 already! Anyone wants to add me its GrumpyOGUK.

I'll add you in minute mattg75

Edit. I've got game pass till march 2023

The PC version is a different beast to the ps5 one.
How good a PC do you have to have to enjoy it? My laptop spec is Intel Core i7-10750H Processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650. Would that run it well enough to justify getting it, in light of the issues people are having? Or not? I’m guessing it would only be able to play it on heavily reduced settings. When people say the PC version is better, are they playing on the highest settings on ridiculously high end PC’s that most don’t have? Because if so, then making the game so inaccessible is just inexcusable really. How can they spend 7 years making a game that barely anyone can play? It’s infuriating really. And to charge top whack too for a broken product.
