Just on this, black Americans are 3 times more likely to be killed by police than white Americans but 6 times more likely to be imprisoned than them. If it follows that police are more likely to be encountering and arresting black Americans on the proposition that they're more likely to be suspects in a crime (and I accept it might not) then the statistics aren't as damning for the US police. Obviously, there's lots of other interpretations including the idea that black people are more likely to go to prison because they're more likely to be investigated or stitched up for a crime, or that the justice system is simply more racist than the police.
It would be interesting to see how the UK compares.
