George Floyd murder / Derek Chauvin guilty of murder

This is an interesting report (pdf) I thought was worth sharing. It was published last month and looked into exonerations of crimes because of official misconduct between 1989 and 2019. It's 218 pages long, and I don't claim to have read it cover to cover, but handily it includes some of the key findings at the start.
  • Amongst people who were exonerated for crimes, 54% included some sort of official misconduct.
  • The most common form of misconduct was concealing exculpatory evidence (in 44% of cases).
  • There's only a slight increase in misconduct when the accused is black rather than white (57% to 52%), but it's much higher in murder, drug related crimes and crimes that involve the death sentence.
  • Police officers are responsible for misconduct in 35% of the cases.
  • Prosecutors are responsible in 30% of the cases, but this varies according to the crime.
  • Police commit misconduct more often in state courts, whereas prosecutors are more likely to do it in federal cases.
  • Police were responsible for most of the witness tampering, misconduct in interrogation and fabricating evidence.
I'm still working my way through other bits of the report, but obviously none of this is ideal. On the one hand, you've got innocent people convicted, but on the other hand, presumably you've got people getting off on a technicality because police and prosecutors are taking short cuts and not doing their job properly.

It of course worth mentioning that they only look at exonerations, so they don't mention how prevalent misconduct is overall.

Can’t help but think these are amongst the first shots in a civil war.

A terribly sad indictment of everything that’s wrong at present over there.

The first photo’s timing is incredible however with the bullet having already left the gun, you can see the casing being expelled just above the gun along with exhaust gases. It seems people can’t have an argument or any sort of physical encounter in certain parts of the States without people ending up shot.

And still, it all happened within metres of tens of heavily armed police (I really can’t get my head round what’s going on in America):

And the altercation immediately before it:

It makes a mockery of their claim that guns make everyone safer. If that had happened in the UK, there would have been a bit of a fight, everyone would have dragged them apart, and both would have left with their lives. In America, self defence is considered a valid excuse to kill someone, and not defending your life, incidentally, defending yourself from getting maced. Avoiding having ichy eyes and not being able to see for a while is considered serious enough to kill someone. And they're right to some extent, because once you accept that everyone is allowed to walk around with a gun, then you have to accept that people react instinctively to threats, rather than carefully calculating the threat. Which is why it's not a good idea to give everyone a fucking gun.

Based on what I've seen in the past, he will almost certainly get away with this killing, because there's evidence that the other person initiated things.

Also worth noting that the guy who was killed was also carrying a gun (inside left pocket of his jacket) when he was killed. Didn’t make him any safer mind. It’s basically like the Wild West now where ‘who draws quickest’ wins.

There is an interesting article on the Proud Boys in this weeks New Statesman.

Well worth a read if you can get a copy or find it online
